Diana's wedding in 1981 cost £30m according to last night's news. If you adjust that figure for inflation you get £86m. Assuming this one will be on the same scale as that one, let's say it's going to cost £100m just to make it simple.

A lot of money for sure, but put in context, piffling. The budget for the Olympics is thought to be £12bn.

If you compare the two in terms of 'return on investment', there can't be any comparison. Just think about how crazy the Americans are on the whole about the royal family, in particular anything relating to Diana. The tourist industry (which PAYS tax remember) is going to go nuts for this - like it or not, this will be THE event of summer 2011.

The 'cost to the taxpayer' argument is a non-issue as it will make us a profit.

Don't know about others, but I have 2 reasons why this engagement bears importance for me.

1. Thankfully, Williams hasn't (yet?) followed his dad's current footsteps, and instead chosen a pretty face, to add to the Royals.

2. William gave his late mum's ring to his fiancee. I have a soft spot for Diana for the emotional pain she suffered in her short life. It is good to see that her son highly values what once belonged to his late mum.

Other than that, I don't think the newspaper need to scream about this event any more. It's a good news when anyone gets engaged TBH, not just Prince Williams. This news was echoing over and over and over on radio, TV and internet yestrday, like everyone's business. Sky news team had a different idea. They sent their helicopters to Sunningdale instead to change the scenery, and provided the live coverage of a stalled van for about 8 hours.

I sure am no Royalist but good on them, they seemed like nice couple and he appeared really protective towards her during the interview.....

Quite right to use his mothers engagement ring too. I'd have done the same had I lost my mother before I'd married.

All the best to them, but yes, couldn't really give a toss personally

We'll its a ******* disgrace if it costs the taxpayer anything in my book.

Hows about this.

Sell raffle tickets at say five pound each and the prize for the winner is a ride with Kate
Knock her back doors in - anything goes, she's nto allowed to say no.
Bet she like that sort of thing too

That'll pay for the wedding no problem

They pay their taxes and donated their hereditary revenues from the Crown Estates to the country in exchange for the Civil List.

I find that my share of helping them to keep going is manageable at 62p per annum.

It might also be a disgrace that one family get such good benefits and a big house in London.....

However much it costs, it will bring more money to the country so I'm all for it.

Not quite sure why it can't happen on a Saturday rather than employers having to lose a days graft....although I am grateful for the extra holiday, industry probably isn't.

..and where do they get there money from?

In effect, they are using there normal benefit money rather than getting additional benefits.

What a lucky bunch of council house tenants they are!

That's good. My bet's on you. Go on, Andy! Win the bleddy race! Win me at least 20 squids! You may mean that you have been hitched as well now, like the Prince. Many more congrats to you as I know you a gallop more than I know the Prince charming.

My prediction - Wills and Kate get hitched. Harry gets pissed at the reception throws one up her, resulting the in the first offspring being a ginger.

Sit back and watch it all come unstuck from that point forwards.
