the 5series interior is much better than the 3series, can't comment on the new 5 but the E60 interior is a wonderful place to sit. Infact i'd say the 3series interior is quite very dull.

I have driven a 911 Tip on track - it was the worst car I have ever driven on track. It was just horrible. Two biggest issues were it was very slow to react and then would also intersperse this with gear changes of it's own accord!
The 'Tip' in my 2003 530diesel is better.

The 3 series interior is a let down compared to the new 5 series, the interior of which is gorgeous and much better than an A5/A6. It's about the same as my current 5 though, so that's what I should be comparing it against I suppose. It would be lacking some toys compared to the 5.
If I were to go with that idea then perhaps better to avoid the M3 and go 335i or 335d as Spider suggested. As a 'stop gap' car it will be cheaper to run/buy and lose less money over the next 18 months or so? Even try a touring as it's then less complicated trying to explain to people who ask why I've gone from M5 to 3 series, just say practicality. Don't want long conversations in the work car park explaining all the issues.

Is the 335i no longer made? I can't see it in the new car section of the BMW website, not that I would be buying brand new but just wanted to get the power figures.

i have a 09 plate 535 diesel m tech and i cant fault it, have have had 7's and tbh THIS is buy far the best choice, i love it and dont want anything else,
when it comes to a car like this, i recon i could put it on autotrader and sell it within 2 days as for a 550 your lose loads and be waiting months and months,
Just think on the fuel bill mate. ummmm £80 on diesel for 600 miles or £80 on fuel for HALF the miles

Thanks Jay, I have no doubt the 535D MS is a blinding car. I had the new shape 530d for demo over a weekend and that engine was a peach, I can only imagine the 535d engine is that bit better. My problem is I think there is a good chance that when the new M5 comes out I'm going to just want it, not brand new, but a year old. So I need something that will keep my happy for 18 months or so and lose the least, and that might be the 3 series.
There don't seem to be many 335i cars available. A search on the bmw website shows just three! Can that be correct? Did they not sell well?

i recon it because people went for the 330 due to penny pinching,you can still buy the 335i as this is still a selling model, out of 5 colleagues at my company, 4 have the 335 and me with the 535dms lol, mine always stands out
as for the wanting the new m5 i totally understand when i had the e39 540i i wish i went for the m5, and i did at a big big financial loss.
If you are only wanting a car for a 18month period and know you will be selling it, as a concluded decision many have opted for a audi rs edition as these really hold there value. or have gone for the very popular m3 ( i.e m3 5door)
i have test driven the 550 when i bought my partners new 1series ms, and i had a really really really big smile on my face, i loved it but personally i didnt want to lose so much money on the fuel bill, HOWEVER the depreciation is also another factor, IF you can afford to lose a bit and spend the additional on fuel for the next 18 months, THEN go for it, you wont be disappointed.
if i were you i would go to bmw and test drive to 3, you might not like it as they are much smaller, but if you go for a 335, then why not look at a ex demo m3 for a little more cash, that would sell again much better then the 335.

Yes this was my whole initial reluctance when people first suggested a 3 series (on a different thread of mine). It is a much smaller car and that is quite a difference to get used to, I do like my space and that's why I went over from compact saloon to mid sized a few years ago.
I wouldn't have thought the actual driving experience will be a let down, it should be lighter and more agile/chuckable than my heavy 5.
All in all though don't you think that the 335d would be the best to go for in terms of depreciation?

i agree when people search for a new car they tend to go for the car thats going to give them the best mpg, price, relability and best resell value, So they look manly for a diesel, i have had them for many years without problems,
As John mentioned above a used one would be best as you wont lose as much on your return sale, 335d would prob be better than a 535d, however that depends on your prefrence, as i am like u, i like room, and the bmw models have changed somewhat,
the 1 series is the same size inside as the old 3 series,
the 3 series is now slightly bigger, but the 5 is like to old 7 series, and the 7 is just bigger,

Try the 335d ms SALOON and, the interior is nothing compared to the 5 but livable...

Other thing is most of my journeys are short and multiple, ie 20 minute ones. Will a diesel even be warmed up enough to really benefit me in mpg terms
Not all petrol models have this fitted (at least in UK spec anyway).
Other than that. I suppose its resale residuals. Big engined 5series always take a dent, whilst the diesels and 3.0 six pots hold quite well (demand, I guess).
I wouldn't even sniff at a 3 series unless its purely for residual reasons. Having said that, why not get a 550 on lease? Then use that in the mean time to see what is arond is a few years time when teh keys need to be handed back.

I couldn't contemplate spending all that money on a car with huge depreciation costs to use as an inbetweener until you can afford the next M5.
Why not just get your current M5 fixed correctly and run that until you have the funds? Surely that is the cheapest option???

Saying that this vibration has been there for probably close to a year now, perhaps that means it's nothing serious?
My problem is that if I take it to a BMW garage and they diagnose something really bad it will then be logged into their system forever, so no good for px in the future unless I fix it (at mega cost)
I would never sell it privately with an unknown fault in it, not fair on the poor bugger who buys it.

My problem is that if I take it to a BMW garage and they diagnose something really bad it will then be logged into their system forever, so no good for px in the future unless I fix it (at mega cost)

i paid 23k for my 08 335i SE coupe 25,000 miles + £3500 worth of extras in 30/1/2010
i bet i would still get around 20k , 10 months later + 10,000 miles more
last time i looked on autotrader, only (25) 335i coupe in the uk for sale. + only one 08 plate for sale ;-)
