550i or 535d?

The private warranty companies seem to use this definition for what they call a 'breakdown' which is the event they actually cover.
Breakdown means the sudden and unexpected failure of a part arising from any permanent mechanical, electrical or electronic fault, which causes the part to stop working, and means that it needs repairing or replacing before it will work properly
Would my vibration fall into this definition? Or would the engine have to fail first? At that point wouldn't they use their other get out clause which says that if the engineer feels that earlier attention to a symptom could have prevented the failure they will throw out the claim?
Thanks

No I agree absolutely, but there are some to55ers about who would palm it off if possible. There are threads on Pistonheads nearly every week.

my interior is actually lightyears ahead in terms of style and build quality compared to my friends similarily aged E46. Go figure.
the 5series interior is much better than the 3series, can't comment on the new 5 but the E60 interior is a wonderful place to sit. Infact i'd say the 3series interior is quite very dull.

And compared to an E46 -that they haven't made for almost six years?
The outlaws had a 535d - the interior was fine but very "middle aged" - most are covered in horrible faux wood with beige headlining.
God there is some cr4p being spouted on here from people with no idea - someone saying 335is and 335ds don't sell well? They are in massive demand and sell very quickly.
Ding is right though - there aren't many 335is around - bit more specialist, thirstier and pricier to run and also more prone to breakdowns. The 35d unit is proving to be near bulletproof.
Another plus - their might not be loads in it weight wise but a 3er (current shape) really does handle a lot better than a 5er (M5 excepted). They are a far "sportier" car especially once you ditch the hateful runflat tyres.
5er is more of a fast express/GT type car. I've driven 100s of miles in a 535d and owned a 335d for over a year - the 3er runs rings around the 5 in terms of handling dynamics and "fun" - but if you need space, even a Touring is pretty small inside.

How do you find the interior quality between the E60 and your own car Mattee?
I couldn't help but feel a bit let down, when i jumped into a 3 year old 330D M-Sport, while owning our 530D E60.

I find it very good - I think the type and colour of leather helps - I've got Terra (a very slightly reddish brown) and a silver dash which looks decent. Sit in a cloth interior 3er with wood bits and it'll make you puke.
I haven't got i-drive (I hate it) so the dash is nice and "clean" - I can't stand cluttered fussy dashboards which is why I struggle to like most Audis inside even though most people rate them.
Everything is easy to reach, everything works, nothing gets on my nerves. The leather has no sign of wear at all (I do condition it every few months which helps), no annoying scratches, etc. To some these things aren't important - they want a NASA style techfest of a car laden with gadgets. To me the car is pretty tech laden anyway ; you get more toys in a 335i/335d even with no extras, better brakes and most important of all, they are the ONLY 3ers apart from the M3 with proper fully hydraulic steering - the rest are corrupted with electrical assistance and suffer for it.
Most important of all though is a enormous panoramic sunroof - makes the car very light and airy. I will not have a car without one ever again!

Ok well sorry to bore you all with this but I have finally come to a decision. Pondered over it long and hard and have decided to follow the advice of John Banks (and others) and sit tight.
I'm going to carry on and run the M5 until next year. At least until the new M5 is unveiled at either Frankfurt or Geneva to see whether it will definitely be of interest. The F10 on the whole has gained weight and I want to see what they have done to counter this in terms of handling for the M5.
I'll also see if I can meet up with Rookymatt (if his kind offer still stands) in the near future. If he thinks it might be a big problem then I'll think about a stop gap like a 335d, or even a 320d and give it to my wife or mum when I'm finished with it.
So, if all goes well I'll buy John Banks a drink (he really didn't want me to buy the 535d!) If the engine goes bang and I have to cough up £20k I'm going to report him to the GMC for negligence! LOL

Looks nice Mattee, nicer than what i'd have thought anyway!
Never do anything, unless your 100% sure you want it. Although going to a diesel, then back to the new M5 might make it seem a larger/better change, than your current M5 to the new one. Just jesting...sounds like a smart move. When do they say the new one will be out and whats the expected cost?

Like that Mattee.
Hope it works out Ding. I was thinking that if you can rev it to 8000 RPM repeatedly several months later then it seems very unlikely to be engine internals.

It will be unveiled in 2011 either at Geneva or Frankfurt. Deliveries will be in 2012. Prices will probably be £80k. Not sure whether I want to spend £80k on car, especially one that depreciates so much. But that would mean waiting until 2013 for a year old one.
My M5 cost about £72k with all the options. I bought it 18 months old for £52k. After 3.5 years it's worth £18k px.
So really this car loses approx £10k/ year in the first 4 years or so. So whether I buy it 18 months old or brand new I'll be £10k down each year. So maybe I should just buy it new?? It will depend on my mood at the time and how much the school fees are.
At least if I hang onto my M5 for a little longer then if I do decide to go for the 535d ms then I can get it for a better price. Or the E63 will be a more reasonable price.
Anyway, I'm waffling now!

Is that why 90 percent of BMW 3 series are 320d's you see ?
Ok, the 335d is popular, and rightly so but most people aren't really all that arsed and in isolation a 120d is quick enough for most people and situations, so my money would be on shifting a 320d just as easily as there are more normal punters who would see the 335d as an irrelevance, whereas those interested in going fast will seek out 335d's.
Case in point, our neighbours have a 520d and thinks its exactly the same car, in the same colour as the one over the road which is a 535d, and to be fair, they look the same, I doubt she uses the performance of the 520d.

Often see a black 318d Touring parked at the end of the road. Same colour and even the same wheels as ours. They do look similar but the 318d has half the power.

Tbh I've always found the side profile of the CLS odd, the old model looked awkward to me, like a banana.
MB seem to be hit and miss with their styling of late. The C Class looks good, the E Class coupe is actually quite beautiful, the CL Coupe looks spot on for such a big car but the E Class saloon is odd.

Plus they have that headache of a handbrake!
Going back to the 550, it's a LOT cheaper than the M5(if it does cost 80k) and although depreciation will be mega it wouldn't be MUCH more than an M5 in percentage of cost terms.
Dunno I would want to spend all that money on a car intend on getting rid of after around 18 months though. Another question is do you reckon you'll keep your current M5 till the new one comes around? I think you've sewn the seed now and will end up changing anyway.

On your second point, as long as I'm happy that the engine won't go pop then I think I can see it out. But you are right, it will always be at the back of my mind that I want to change the car. Only time will tell.

I take it you've passed other completely different cars through your mind?
Porsche Panamera doesn't seem to be losing a silly amount of value and although people criticize the looks, in the flesh i think it's a stunning car.

The Panamera is still at the back of my mind, the turbo with the PDK box is pretty lethal. I also agree that it actually has a lot of road presence when you see it in the flesh, however it is still very ugly from certain angles. It's difficult to part with so much money when you don't feel in love with at least 90% of a car. Not sure I'm at the 90% mark with that car yet....

I know what you mean. The Turbo, would be a complete all in one car though. Even has 4WD which is a must now.
I was actually going to mention the Maserati GranTurismo, but i asume your sticking with 4 doors?
