I bought a Legacy B4 without having ever driven it. They are so rare nobody I went to had a demo car. I was not disappointed and had read all the reviews before hand.(And I had the chance to sit in one in a showroom).
I think a common factor with cars like these are that if you drive them and start laughing out loud the first time you push them, then you know you have made the right decision. I couldn't get the smile off my face for the first 2 weeks.
I also had to change my driving position as I found that when the 2nd turbo kicked in I was in danger of my hands coming off the stearing wheel as I got sucked into my seat.
PS For those of you who are worried about being beaten by astras, get a B4. It's a 280 BHP twin turbo impreza under the skin but it does 170 MPH due to better aerodynamics.
The impreza is better 20 to 70 but the B4 is awesome from 70 to 150+. Ideal car if you want something with a lower profile. (You may have seen one on the roads but you probably didn't give it a second look).

I purchased my first WRX, 5 days ago and was interested to read others' first impressions of the WRX.
I'm just relieved to hear that driving with a huge grin on my face is normal.
Also a whistling sound on acceleration - is that also normal (refer DavidRB's post)?

if it's a slight whistling sound, that's normal. It's just the sound of the turbo.
You'll get other pleasant sounds too. The plink plink of the metal contracting as it cools down after a full on blat in the country. Dunno about MY01's but on my 'ye olde' MY00 you can hear all kinds of whoosh noises that just enhance the grin factor

I've had my MY00 for 16 days and my face hurts from all the grinning
Helluva car you won't be dissapointed and sure there are quicker cars on the road but that's life, I'm sure you know someone with a bigger house, prettier girlfriend, better job, etc, etc.
Enjoy it man cos it's yours
