Ok so he didn't support the RAF cause, just wanted to get peoples attention?

Same goes for the rest of his 'committed leftist activism'?

Well if the opposite of all that is being like you then I'm with The Clash all the way.

I hope your other persona you have told us about isn't a pseudo intellectual ******** like this one!!

Playing a guitar and parroting left wing slogans does not make one an intellectual or worthy of being listened to (except the music of course).

Tony, you're missing the point, as usual. Were you even around at the time this band were in their heyday? This band weren't a political party, they were a ROCK BAND. Angry at everything and looking for something to throw in the face of the establishment. Anything which politicises the thought of young people, which gets them to question, rebel, or do anything other than absorb regurgitated pap like x-factor and soap operas has to be respected and admired.

If you ever, ever in your pointless life do anything that approximates one millionth of the worth and influence of these four blokes, I'll be amazed.

Is it? At least enjoying soap operas is honest, unlike crude left wing politics and idealism.

Just saw this on the BBC site, as former members are involved this might actually be quite interesting:

Clash album London Calling to spawn rock biopic

I remember being at school when London Calling was released and the whole punk movement was in full swing..... it made the staid middle classes somewhat uneasy and that included many of the teachers.... good times

All we need now is a Stranglers biopic. One of the world's most underrated bands IMO!

Certainly not. Curing cancer would only change the way people die, not how they live.

LOL -

If you see just one movie this year, see this one: Leonardo diCaprio IS Hugh Cornwell in "Whatever happened to the Heroes - a biopic-in-black"
Also starring: Jack Black as Jet Black, Jayden Smith as J.J. Burnel and Javier Bardem as Dave Greenfield

Saw this the other day , Should be interesting if they get the right actors , wonder who will play Strummer ?? Also should be factually correct if Jones and Simonon are involved . I heard the producer of the record (Guy Stevens ) was slightly mad so that should add a nice twist to the story

The Stranglers were another band I loved in the late seventies and early eighties , I was always memorised by JJ's bass and to this day he still would be in my fantasy rock band as bass player. Caught them live as well as the Clash and I have to say was a more enjoyable concert than the Clash one , Cornwell interacted with the audience a lot more and at one point they got a punter on the stage took his trousers down and smacked his **** " Down in the Sewer" live was just awesome
Although I remember when I saw the Clash their popularity had waned and Strummer had disappeared to Paris just before the tour in a publicity stunt as tickets were not selling as well as previous tours.

These days though I listen to more Clash than Stranglers.

Is it me or do they just not make music like this any more ? I'm probably clouded in nostalgia but nothing "gets me " like this music ever did. Nirvana filled the gap once but that didn't last long , Really liked Sex on Fire by KOL but can take or leave the rest of the album , Even had a brief listen to ZZ Top again last week but now got bored with them, although Billy Gibbons does play some cracking licks.

They do still make music like this, but you have to search for it as most of the bands are probably unsigned and just out there gigging.

I suppose that's what you get due to the likes of various "talent" shows where the artists churn out karaoke rehashes, and can't play instruments or write their own songs.

Maybe one day real music will come to the fore again.

Quite simply along with The Ruts, the best band ever.
