Yeah, but who is going to want a car on outright acceleration alone?
I'm sure you wouldn't have been beaten round the twistys by the Fieast just as the WRX wouldn't get beaten by the turbo.
To be honest Jza I don't even know what this 'PPP' is. I assumed it was a prodrive upgrade pack? Can someone enlighten me.
I was planning to get the WRX upgraded and Subaru told me that Prodrive are going to do a package for about £2000 which included an exhaust.
I'm not going to be in a big hurry to get it. I will enjoy the car as standard for a while, then probably get it, then it would feel like a new car again (prolonging the Xmas-pressie effect...)
Nor sure abou the exhaust. I don't really want it to be louder since this is my comfy car. Get enough noise from the Elise. If it makes the car sound nicer and more importantly, increases performance, without increasing the volume much then it will be fine.
(Also Jza, remember that Evo were testing a brand new WRX which hadn't been run in, with dodgy tracking, agianst a well run in Clio which had just had it's suspension thoroghly checked and fixed. But still, maybe it will encourage the Max P. boys to go for the 172 and we can enjoy a bit more exclusivity)

BT52,
I get me kicks from me motorbike! Cant fit in the Elise!
The PPP is as you say Prodrives mods to improve driveability. Adds great lumps of low down torque! £2000's a lot tho! The exhausts supposed to be fairly quiet in comparison to the Scoobysport item. Depends what your after! I figure it would be nice to hear what revs your at (i cant and forget to change up!). I do fancy the Leda supsension - might try the odd track day then!!
Good point about the evo test. Couldnt believe they'd driven the same car!!!
Mr Leigh,
Have you sat behind a whole string of Turbos in a WRX and nailed it after every corner / junction - for 2 hours?
No - probably not.
Well i did and i state for the record that i do not claim the car is faster - just that it is no where near as slow as fellow BBS'ers would make you think. I kept up on the straights (the Turbos gained a bit). Made up ground in the corners. Im a fellow Leicester man so maybe we should go for a spin sometime to prove the point!
Cheers fellas

Neil...
Picture this. A car company produces a model that shows xxx bhp.
2 years later, they revise the car. Its now a lot stiffer but a bit heavier. Their major problem though is EU emmissions have become what the Californian State Goverment lay in bed and dream of.
So to make the car perform with 3 catalysts and a noise limit that requires a smaller bore exhaust (the easiest way to make them quiet) they tune the nuts out of the engine. They fit EGT sensors, individual A/F sensors, intake Tumble Generation Valves and they link all this up to a very fast, state of the art ECU, loaded with a very well developed map. Suddenly you are back to square one, power wise.
However... if we remove some of the emmission control equipment (not all of it) and put up with a bit more noise (so we can run bigger pipe diameters and a straight through)... we can reap all the benefits of the huge advance in engine management.
Whoosh.........

You know the MK1 owners are not going to believe you

Maybe we could start the Leon Cupra BBS. Ive got mine. Love the handling and even gearchange. Bit more poke, but then there's lots of people out there that will add an ECU and exhaust - 210bhp and 210lbft.

So if i buy the Scoobysport full system for my WRX, will you need to remove anything else off the car?

Forget the performance difference. The problem I would have would have is people laughing at me when I get out of the car when they expect Noddy and Big Ears to jump out!
Only joking!! I drove a MY01 very nice but honestly I do prefer my MY00. Maybe another marque next!
All the best

200% agree with Pete Croney. The system on my WRX is the b######s!!
Both new and old cars are ugly, the new one just uglier. Trust me, I did not buy it for it's looks!
INHO, a modded WRX is a better car than previous model.
Cue a grilling.

Obviously I have never owned an MY01 and I am going off figures supplied by magazines, test reports and Subaru figures. I am though on my second impreza I had a UK MY98 turbo and my current MY00 RA so I know how good the cars are.
Just so we can get an accurate representation how many current MY01 owners have actually owned a pre MY01 impreza turbo [not test driven, actually owned one] ?
The only reason I ask this question is that obviously an MY01 is a quick car I am just wondering whether MY01 owners realises what the old car was capable of.
This is not trying to catch anybody out I am just interested on how many have swopped and what they think. I know Pete C has had both and obviously likes the MY01 (and a smart looking and sounding one it is) but what about the rest of you ?
cheers

Pete,
Ah, I now see where this performance stems from ! Tell me, what about the STi... is this also going to benefit from the same mods you describe?
Chins,
Yes, The leon has potential and im waiting for a decent exhaust system for it, the car has the looks but i think the engine is being strangled by CATs etc. Pete, once again i ask you (beg u more like!), Heyward and scott plus Leon Cupra equals a nice exhaust note, a quicker responding engine and a quicker car, can u help or is it too much of an effort for too small a market?. 210BHP&LB??? is this an AUDI TT ecu? Too be honest, the 'Can't switch the bugger off' traction control struggles to cope with super traffic light getaways already, it sure hasn't got Impreza 4WD traction has it?
Sorry, i know this isn't a sporty Seat BBS but as chins has mentioned, there isn't one ....yet!

No I haven't actually owned either, just test drove them both (hard though) back to back.
As far as I can tell the new car is more capable in every way other than acceleration. It should be capable of more with the improved grip levels etc. I can't believe that they would replace the car with something that isn't dynamically superior. That just wouldn't make sense. Although the character of the way it does it may be different.
This seems to be what the magazines have been saying as well, but they have been putting a huge emphasis on the acceleration.
I don't trust Evo's evaluation since they have at no point mentioned the brakes, easily the most noticeable improvement.
I guess we will have to wait for some owners who have owned both to let us know once the new one has been properly run in.

Guys
I've OWNED a MY00...had it for a year and now moved to a MY01 wagon, which I've had since March 1st. Also driven MY97 MY98 and MY94 cars.
In every way, I think the 01 a superior car. When it loosens up more, I think the flatter torque curve will make it AT LEAST the equal of the older car in a straight line. Already, I would say, its better point to point. It's much easier to drive quickly than the 00, and those brakes certainly give you greater confidence. It's a better motorway cruiser by far, though top seems a bit higher, so occasionally have to drop down a cog in the ebb and flow.
The MY01 is very quiet in comparison to the 00, and the seating position is also a bit higher. I think this can give you the impression that its slower....
Delighted with the purchase. Liked the old one a lot aswell. Just think the new one IS superior... Horses for courses though and I can see that the adrenaline rush is easier to get in the older car, because it is relatively unrefined next to the 01.
Cheers.

I test drove both. Bought the WRX. I admit that there is definatley more of a kick in the **** in the mk1, but on the road there is v. little difference - as i said before.
~MY00 owners comment about how "raw" their cars are. The older cars a lot more raw - but in all honesty both UK cars are very tame compared to say a TVR or Elise. You have to experience a true sports car to appreciate how clinical impreza's are in comparison. If your after thrills get a bike - that really will give you an adrenilin rush!

The ratio's haven't changed but the wheels are 17" now rather than 16" which is causing this effect.

DT,
Just get the ScoobySport system and worry about the emissions after you have sold it, which will be before the first MOT. I have it and it is bloody marvellous.
Chris,
I had a standard my97 from new for about a year. Standard I would agree an older car is faster on a road you know. My WRX has now been modified and I think it now faster, it is just perceived as slower because it is nowhere near as raw as the older car. You do feel slightly further away from the action but are fully aware the action is now at a higher level.
I would imagine a comparison of std cars in the wet would have the WRX in front. Unless you have tried it the way the front grips is amazing.

As Steve says it does make a hell of a difference.
Now the car has done 3,000 miles and feels a bit looser (was VERY tight when new), I will get some outputs. Probably next week, both emmissions and power outputs.
The backbox will certainly provide a good hike on its own, as the standard 01 backbox is more restrictive than previous models (it goes from 2.5" ID to 2.25" ID and is baffled... we use 2.5" OD and straight thru). The pull to the redline and spool up time is considerably better with the full system, as you would expect.
The full system means the car still has a cat. This cat is in the manifold. The temperatures involved here, will mean this cat is very efficient.
My last car (MY99) was a stunning bit of kit and there was a lot of soul searching before I committed to the new model. My new car is in a different class and is quicker than the 99
If you are going to test drive a WRX, test it for the handling, comfort and build quality. Power wise it can be made at least as quick as the previous model and will still be quiet and refined inside.

Thanks Pete,
Checked your site, would I be right in thinking:
Downpipe - 180
Centre - 100
Silencer - 260
AirFilter - 47
Total - 587
inc Vat - 689
Approx cost of fitting full system? Any advantage in a two piece centre?
Do you tint windows too?
Cheers

Hi DT
The WRX prices are slightly different...
170 DP
80 centre de cat
90 rear centre
260 backbox
40 ITG
10 delivery
650 ex vat
763.75 incl vat
If we fit, it is 834.25 inc.
We did want to make the centre in one piece, but it is then too long for some carriers and all air frieght companies (unless you pay special freight fees ).
We don't tint windows. I'd get a quote from one of the glass companies.

Pete,
You are God!
Had the centre section fitted yesterday to compliment the downpipe and (sorry) Prodrive backbox. Albeit on a mixed tank of unleaded and SUL the difference is even better than I imagined. Like a pillock I turned up for the swap with half a tank of u/l!!
Admittedly my car has only 1600 miles on it but it no longer feels restricted between 5500 and 6500 revs. It just goes straight to 7000 and feels as if it wants to go some more.
It is however, the most surreal experience. Plodding along at 80mph the noise in the car is only slightly louder than normal but going through the Queensway tunnel in B'Ham last night it is the most amazing noise. Any more tunnels and the whole system is for sale as I WILL get banned for being a t##t!!!!
Did go past 2 m/way patrols at midnight at 75 ish on as little throttle as possible for obvious reasons. The motorway was dead quiet so if either were offended by noise they could easily have pulled me for a look and listen. They didnt so it cant be all bad.
I think problems may arise if you start tearing around housing estates in 2nd gear but I have no sympathy then anyway.
As the Nike advert says, just do it!

I have already ordered the Full exhaust syteem from Pete, and it's on his way to Holland, where I live ! (I hope all parts together )
I have had also the MY99 Scooby, with almost all the parts from Pete,
I have driven both, and I think defently the same as Pete,..the WRX is from another class !
