I tried to get insured through the HSBC for my Type UK, prodrive and the broker came back with a reasonable quote, I sent her back to confirm the type of car and as they didn't have the prodrive version on the system they refused to insure the car, eventually cost me 1k more to get cover.

warbs,

thats funny do u declare your wit to the ins.co., its lethal

dazmakinen,

of course he did, i think its an urban myth that MOST co. try to wriggle out of claims.

when my crashed 200sx was inspected you know how they checked for engine mods? they didnt cause the bonnet was jammed shut- could have had a V8 under there!

Tiggs

ps- optimax!!!!!! r u boys serious! do u call them when theres a following wind!

Try arguing in fornt of a Judge in court. The only way to get insurance companies is to beat them at there own game - a legal one. You hear of nightmare stories like some of those above and wonder.

If you up the BHP by 50+ then yes, they have every right to demand notice, but if you add a spoiler it may well be a different story? And is "changing" the spoiler a performance enhancement, a saftey feature (holds the road better!!), or just a cosmetic change? - Your car falls into a mine shaft subsidence hole and is crushed. The insurance company says - no pay, you had a different spoiler. Any lawyers out there care to comment on the word reasonable? How would the Judge see it? Is there any case law?

dave,

thanks for one of the few sensible responses! i can not belive that in an example like yours (ie- car wrecked by no fault of its cosmetic change) a court will side with an ins. co. and further more- it is my experience (limited though it may be) that ins. co. dont **** about anyway.

Tiggs

ps- as already mentioned i havent paid a penny to ins.co. in a long long time so i am no expert- just interested.

Be careful with non-standard spoilers around corners

I've not declared my spoiler, but I've still got the original as well. I'm prepared to pay for a new one myself if I need to rather than pay inflated premiums for no valid reason.

A £500 spoiler on a £20K car = £100+ more insurance - forget it, I'll take my chances.

My example was theoretical, not fact. I just hate corporate ******* companies that are taking the World for a ride. The only way you get to win is vote for an independant candidate and if you get screwed or hear "true" stories of people getting same then dont EVER buy from them. It is the only vote we do have with big corporations. As for Europe, that dictatorship takes over in 2004, George was a little early.... Yes he really is there you know!

EBRWRX :- your comment;

A £500 spoiler on a £20K car = £100+ more insurance - forget it, I'll take my chances.

Can I just give you the insurance reponse to your claim?:-

A £500 undeclared spoiler on a car so damaged its now worth £2000 instead of the £20000 it WAS worth - forget compensation, we will keep our £18000 payout!!!

YOU LOOSE - Good move, what a donkey brain!!

pete, you've been sucked into the urban myth- ins. co. dont care, its all over excited hype from ppl on here who like the idea of getting screwed for ins. cause it makes them feel special. for all the moaning they love paying big bucks on ins. and having cars everyone wants to nick, otherwise they'd just be normal and thats what they fear more than anything else- motoring normality.

Question

So, Tiggs, what you are basically saying is:-

'Dont tell Ins Co. if you modify your car and hope that when you need to claim that £20000 in return for your £500 premium, you hope that the loss adjuster and engineer, who gets the photos of the car, dont care that it has been modified and will pay out anyway'??????

I stand amazed that you would advocate such a policy - it is a totally stupid attitude to take, IMHO of course!!

lol- i would do exactly that myself- as it is i dont insure my scoob myself so i dont do it.

i agree there is the potential for problems so i dont suggest anyone does the same.

Tiggs

Oh dear oh dear Mr Lewis - pay attention please - I still have the original spoiler - very easy to do a swap if the unfortunate happens thank you very much.

I'd pay more lipservice to insurers if they weren't out 2 screw me for every penny I've got - and b4 u ask I work in the investment arm of one of the biggest global insurers so I know exactly how they think and work. Actuaries and risk adjustors are amongst my biggest clients.

Funny thing is they wont insure staff driving anything higher than a Robin Reliant , but when I got my policy through from the broker, guess who the re-insurance agent was

Unhappy

All those who believe that they could quickly "swap" spoilers if the unthinkable happened are really kidding themselves....

As per my car, stolen, and joyrided, not much you can do in that circumstance. Or an accident where the car becomes immobile...do you carry the spare in the boot as well????

Easy fix, either get a dedent insurance company who understand that a spoiler is not a huge "mod" or declare it.

You may just be the one to get the one insurance "adjuster" who actually knows what he's doing.

Tiggs- wouldnt you feel a little foolish if your policy was refused payment and work looked the other way, leaving you to cover the cost??

my insurance company will insure me in whatever i care to drive and are unconcerned about mods- if i wanted a lambo modded to the hilt then i could

however, if i had to insure myself i would not be disclosing mods like a spolier- if i am unlucky to get stung then tuff- imo i am more likely to get hit by a bus!

Tiggs:

You're a professional Radio Control Car Driver - aren't you? I mean that'd explain how your business insures you, no matter what mods you make to your car, and also how someone below the age of 12 can claim to drive something like a Scoob !

hmmmmmm, really?

u see i know of examples (i have quoted a few of my own) where they dont care and dont know.
i have yet to hear of an example to counter mine, in fact pete- yours is a bit of a pointless example cause you have no idea what the ins. co. would have done if you had a non std spoiler.

Tiggs

ps- im insured by my firm so i do what i like and it dont matter, again, i dont suggest ppl act on my thoughts- im just interested.

edit to add that my last point is to make clear that i dont do this, it is not meant to be a "ha ha i dont pay ins. and i mod what i like!"

If it's just a spoiler that your putting on without telling the insurance co, you could probably get away with it if you had to claim by simply refitting your original spoiler back on afterwards. Or in the case of a rear ender, put your old one on and take a hammer to it(before the insurance guy comes to see it of course.)

By the way, I'm not actually recommending you do this..just a wee thought that came to mind, and for the record my scoobs fully insured thanx !
