What's the point in posting something like this , you've obviously just read through this so I guess that makes you a "Flippin muppet" .

Back on topic , if it was me id ring the police as like said someone could be looking for it however seeing as you say its parked across from a police station it could of been stolen and not yet reported .

dunx hit the nail on the head there also if you phone the police and its T&T as well as insured they wont do nothing, even if its sat right outside your window.

dvla take 4-6 weeks, they will contact the address on the v5, the owner then has 4 weeks to reply. if they have no reply they then send you the logbook within the next 2 weeks.

personally i'd go over the road to the station and mention it. give it another month and if still nothing i'd go ahead and contact dvla.

Some poor old guy has had a flat tyre, walked it home and fell, gone to hospital with a broken hip and is sitting in a bed worrying about his little 53 plate car.

Check if its insured. If it is, someones obviously paying for it so leave it.

when the tax runs out it will be towed away and crushed if parked on the road, if the police arnt intersted in it then its not stolen, ask your neighbours, if they dont know anything then id apply for the v5 and at least park it on your property for a while, if nobody turns up its yours.
If the owner wanted it it wouldnt be there, surely they would have had a friend pick it up or something.
maybe it just had a problem and the owner couldnt be arsed sorting it.
Its your decision in the end but id claim it.

As Jamz says and as clearly shown on the V5, that document is not proof of ownership, it means you are the vehicle keeper - any tax disc renewals, claims against the vehicle etc. will be sent to your address.

The owner is the buyer of the car and will have the receipt of purchase, or if it was given as a gift, some evidence that that was the case.

Who is the legal owner?

The legal owner is the owner of the car, that is, the person who has a legally enforceable claim to the car. That person has the right to sell the vehicle while the registered keeper is not in a position to do that (if registered keeper and owner are different).

I still can't believe that the DVLA would write to the RK of a car just become someone passing by has taken a fancy to it, and that if you don't reply then they issue a new V5

How do you prove that anything is yours if you want to sell it?
