I expect even rocket science is a breeze when compared to ECU mapping!

 

Mapping is a skill, like anything else.

Of course "anyone can do it", but will the results be as good, or as safe as someone who knows what he is doing?

Anyone can lay bricks, but NOT anyone can make the resultant wall strong and straight.

You have to start somewhere though don't you... there isn't really anything you can "test" on really is there... It'll either work or it wont, and if it doesn't work, you'll soon figure out what you have done wrong (expensive yes), but you wont do that again

Mapping interests me a lot, even have considered to learn how to do this, but have looked all over the net and don't even know where to start. The only real thing you could probably do is ask a mapper if they could show how it works and work along side maybe?

Jamz: When Bob Rawle is here mapping we take time to show any owner that is interested how we are kitting the car up, what the kit is, the function it performs and then provide a running commentary during mapping to those that are interested or answer any questions and give relevant explanation so that those that have an interest have far more knowledge at the end of the session than they came with. However I cannot see any mapper that does mapping for his living freely showing everyone the rudiments of mapping. This is after all his livelihood so detailed coaching is not going to happen IMHO but giving a good explanation presents no problem whatsoever and is common practice.
Yes you have to learn somewhere but if you are competitive and want to win, set good quarter mile times or lap times your mapping efforts are not likely to result in getting the best from the car for the simple reason that you lack the knowledge and experience.

 

Surely soon somebody will devise a computer that will have inputs from the Knock sensor and Wideband lambda and let the computer modify the map to the safest/ most BHP level as your driving

I have a Simtek on my MY99 and maybe in the future will look at tweaking the map, i already have the programming lead software and dongle, getting the Wideband and good knock sensor next,
My 10 Inch Samsung NC10 Netbook is perfect for looking at the simtek live data

 

This sort of tech has been around for friggin years but it's not massively reliable and will not give the best results ever! you can't jut rely on sensors, you need the feel of the car as well and no sensor is ever going to tell you that.

The Apexi Power FC could "Auto Map" if you wanted it to but I would never trust it I'm affraid!

Computers go wrong, sensors give bonky readings, this will result in a farked map and a blown up engine!

I'll rely on the knowledge and expertise the mappers have and have built up over the many years and countless cars and the tingling feeling in my bottom from the pant-o-meter as it gets quicker and quicker

 

Back to the original post ,I too was a bit miffed by the article but I rang red line because of the fmic and decat exhaust to check to see if they mapped it after each session ,the car was owned by a guy in there advertising dept and no it wasn't mapped until a later issue a befor and after run was done on the rolling road and the car was running absolutely fine with no fuelling issues and it was the guys daily ride more gains was achieved obviously from the remap a few months later . But remember that was on the 2.5 lr engine
