Panerai-style military watches

A Miyota or ETA based quartz watch IMO is on par with a mechanical watch that has ETA or Valjoux derived movement. (Inccidentally, thats exactly what the low-end model Panerais have inside them: http://www.paneristi.com/reference/v...vmt/index.html )
Neither types are special in any way nor command a high price for whatever is "inside" them that moves the hands. As you can buy a variety of watches from a few hundred pounds to several thousand that use the same internals.
The only thing that would command/justify such a price is the "dressing" around the movement and any precious materials used in it or on the casing/strap. Use of steel and good brand engineering on the otherhand sadly dictate otherwise. People will still buy what they like, and I'm not going to stop them. But I have to point out the fact that many watches use the same internals. This to me is what sets apart fashion watches (be it mechanicle or battery) which is just about the look from the genuine creations worthy of appreciation in every detail - internal and external.

Yes,always buy what you like
I chose a Longines dive watch simply because I like Longines.Although a third of the price of the equivalent Rolex/Omega...in fact I'm struggling to understand why it is!
Suppose because The seamasters etc are well known and people are drawn to them.Same as Seiko's dive watch is meant to be great but will never command anywhere near the price
As to the OP, looks alright to me! I did a quick search on that name and a useful Watch forum comes up with some good replies
(and lots of people saying they aren't going to get into the fake/homage/real thing argument again)

Oops, there's quite a lot of Panerai hate coming across in this thread! And according to that article above and other posts I must be so uncool to own a Panerai because I'm not Italian or wearing a wetsuit! What a load of old cr4p is spoken on here, really.
RJM, personally I think you should save up and get the real thing. I don't think you'd be satisfied with a fake (the term 'homage' is there just to make you feel better about wearing a copy). Also, don't be put off by the comments on here about how big they are - if the 44mm is too big for your wrist, there are plenty of 40mm models to choose from which is what I did (40mm GMT PAM244). They are no bigger than the generic Rolex/Omega/Tag offerings.

You're right I wouldn't wear a homage or fake or whatever. I mentioned in my first post that I'm awaiting some compensation from a crash and I'm gonna buy one then, prob early 2011 but I posted the homages up because I remember a lot of people saying they liked the panerai style but didn't want to buy such an expensive watch....
