400+ Classic Guidance
#32
There is a lot of good advice there- my classic is at 340, and I do prefer it to a newage, but think about some different options.
If you have a 752 gearbox, that will probably break quickly, so you either go for 350bhp, and use your gearbox, or an upgraded 754 one, or add 3k for a 6 speed.
Your brakes also need uprating- add 1k for Brembos.
Why not use your engine, with a 350 bhp turbo and mapped ECU, lighten the car, maybe polybush it, fit brembos, and treat yourself to some proper rubber- car will feel much better, and see off those newages
My classic at 320 was faster than a newage with 350 on the track, and he was on slicks

well the gearbox in the 99 classic is a 754 which is alot stronger than the 752.
i am currently looking for some prodrive front calipers if i cant source a good 2nd hand set i shall go down the brembo route.
i dont intend to do the 6speed upgrade until i have got my engine build completed.
i've slowly sourced all of the bits over the last couple of months too build a nice strong engine that can take any abuse that i can throw at it, rather than relying on my current engine on 102k to hold out whilst running it at 350bhp. i dont think its a wise idea to rely on my standard engine, hence why i intend too build up a nice solid bottom end with some sti heads and then when the time comes (money in the bank!) get the right turbo injectors etc.
spec now currently stands at:
Version 5/6 STI heads (re-shimmed, cleaned, re-lapped valves etc)
RCM water pump
RCM Headers
Cometic or cosworth head gasket
ARP 11mmhead studs
Wossner 92.5mm Pistons
STI V9 Cross drilled crank
STI V9 Conrods (??? unsure)
Uprated Oil Pump
I'm still unsure as wether to purchase a CDB or just stick to the ODB rear thrust block which i currently have all stripped and ready too go.

if it was mine i would go for cdb .with your mods it will run 400bhp .every one will say odb will take it ,but cdb is the best so why not use .i start off like you .as you saw my car it is runing 450 bhp .its in bits again i am going for 500 bhp now .so i am glad i got a cdb now .

Sp00ks the 752 and 754 use the same gearset, its just the case that's stronger. All the boxes I've broken have been 754s: stripped 2nd in one and 4th in the others.

gearboxes must purely be luck or past/current driving habbits.
as there are several posts of cars happily running 400+ right upto 450bhp on standard 754 gearboxes...

That goes against everything I'm aware of and have experienced...happy to be corrected but other than the chocolate con rods 'boxes are renown as a weak point on non-sti classics over 300 lbs/ft (it's torque that kills them not horses)

my 752 lasted 20 miles @410bhp
i saw the photos i am not happy as well chris palmer told me the bottom end was fine .and it was number 4 piston had a problem .so when i took the pistons out number 4 piston s oil ring had snapped .had them checked and they were fine .my mate put new rings on them and they are working fine now.but like i said crank rods pump all fine .
i saw the thread chris palmer to do the engime build .do you no he doz not build them. he gets advanced auto performance kingswood tell 01179 672344 to build them. he doz some off RCM s work as well . get the cdb you will regreat it in the long run .must poeple say get a new car but the classic is getting more and more rare now ,lighter handles better looks better

ahh i was under the impression that when i went down there he made it out that he actually does the engine build but sends the block off to roger clarkes to get them to do the machining....
who built the block then chris palmer? or did he just check a block which you had built by a friend?
yeah fingers crossed the crank has been tested today to check that it is "true" and the journal tolerances are correct, will find out the outcome tomorrow.

When I had Harvey carry out a forged build on my V5 type R last year, I was advised that the original OD block was very capableof high outputs, if machined and built correctly, and more than adequate of supporting the 400-450bhp spec that I had outlined, in fact it was mentioned that I could now go up a couple of sizes in the turbo department .
The standard crank was also retained btw but reground and matched with the correct ACL bearings.

i thought a reground at that level advised against.

going by what your saying i'd just get an sc450 package and gerabox, drive in, pays your money, drive out with a reliable 450bhp.
to get it reliable is the key, you can get the standard block up to 400, you'll have to have it rebuilt, with rods and pistons. despite what some folks seem to think, you arn;t garentied to have a lasting 5 speed gearbox once you go over 350, it's pure luck if it survives and i'd expect it to die very quickly.
the sc450 is 12k, but including gearbox, clucth, oil cooler, ecu, gaskets, fluids, labour etc etc it litteral is drive in drive out. by the time you have it built, then buy all the other supporting mods your not gonna be far off that at all.

yeah can be done cheaper that way, but sourcing good quality second hand parts, can at times be risky. plus most tuners will take no responsibility for it breaking if something does go wrong.
personaly i'd rather wait untill i can afford a proper job of it rather than scrimp, just don't think its worth the hassel, of finding all the parts, getting it built, it going bang etc etc
seen several cars go that way and end up cposting more due to having to get it built again

i started off 18 month ago wanting 400bhp in my type r so took it off the road and had a forged engine built , that was the cheap part!! once engine was built thats when you have to get ya wallet out , im on about 20k and still not drove my car yet! BUT hopefully should be getting mapped next week I CANT WAIT MIGHT EVEN MAKE 450+BHP NOW still on standard 5 speed box but ive got a 6 speed spec c on standby... GOOD LUCK WITH THE BUILD BUD ££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££ £££££££££££

That's crazy, just plant a V7/8 STI lump in with an ecu and a bolt-on turbo for £10K you could be up and running with a six speed and Brembos on the list too !
