I know the fuel is much cheaper in the US, but it's not quite the same. Regular unleaded is something like 85RON, not 95 like ours.

They also can't get near 99 from a standard pump. As I understand it, there's quite a price hike to go up even just one point, so, yes, we get ripped off, but I think we're trying to compare apples and oranges here.

That's utter tosh, petrol in the US is of similar RON value as ours, just labled differently.

Of course this hits everything else we buy as well. Hows that in the 'national interest'?
We pay ~58 pence per litre fuel duty, and we pay VAT on the fuel price AND duty.

...and the tax isn't a problem?

It's an obscene cash grab by the government.

You might want to have a read of this:

As oil isn't gonna be around forever and causes pollution, its only fair (inna FREE market) that it is expensive and is highly taxed (by a democratically elected government). This is a free (democratic) country where companies are FREE to charge wot they want (if you dont want to pay, you are 100% FREE not to buy it). When you compare fuel costs to average income, you WILL find that this country is not the most expensive country for fuel,so that takes care of the "it's not fair" arguement. So, put up, or shut up!

Already read it. While I don't dispute that petrol is of a lower octane than UK fuel, it is rated differently there. Regardless of that fact, its still a lot cheaper than here, around 3 dollars a gallon.

No it's not, they use PON as their octane rating, (also called AKI) they have the same basic quality of fuel as Europe.

Our 95RON UL is the same as their 91PON UL
Our 97RON SUL is the same as their 93PON SUL
Our 98RON SUL is the same as their 94PON SUL

It's not a free market if the government uses massive tax to manipulate the market.

How about FREEdom to not pay too much tax?

In a democracy should the individual not decide how much pollution producing petrol they want to consume in accordance with their environmental goals.

If it was so harmful to the environment why not ban it?

Damn infuriating.
Havent needed petrol since before xmas i dont think. I use 95ron but only Texaco/Shell fuel (95ron is fine for a standard uk turbo isnt it?!) Think it was 1.21 or 1.22. Going to need petrol tomorrow so will have a look!!

when you consider what we go through to extract oil, then refine it to make petrol, it is VERY VERY VERY cheap.....taxes ruin it of course, but really just a shade over half a litre of beer is £3.50 in my local town. That is water, hops and barley.

Consider what is done. Sucked from the depths of the earth. Pumped through pipe to a refinery/ or to a dock, and onto a tanker. Refined for days. Pumped to a holding depot. Put into a truck/ train. Pumped from said truck into tank; pumped into car from ground again!.....it is cheap. All that said government taxes are ridiculas, and i dont defend those, but i dont complain overly about the cost. Which is similar to a litre of Coke, and less than beer.

Remember - there is another duty increase in April 2011

Government do this staggered increase all the ******* time - I'm convinced they do it so that the majority of the population will forget about it!

As I have said elsewere, a "free" market is not "free" (in a legal definition it is free, but not in a moral sense, correct??) "YOU" are restricted by your "democratically" elected government, but "YOU" have supported this arrangement through voting or tacitly, yes??

The UK isnt on its own when it comes to high fuel prices, yes?

No,in a "democracy" the individual should not decide how much pollution they produce.Fuel Tax is an excellent way of controlling pollution/fuel price,if it isn't society would object, correct??

I dont know of anyone (with authority) who would argue that oil is NOT harmful to the environment, but an outright ban WOULD massively affect the economy and society (how would you get food to the supermarkets, the lack of revenue, which affects jobs, which the governments need for health, education, police, etc?????),best to TAX those who can afford to pay it,correct???

Thank you for your intelligent questions, at least some c*nt on here doesn't kiss ***.
