I feel for you 99greenwagon but minor trivial repairs as said once done peace of mind, you should have taken a mechanic or someone with knowhow to purchase the vehicle with you.

On the other hand i respect the seller seems to have been as honest as he could with you and as with buying second hand cars it is BOUGHT AND SOLD AS SEEN.

Dont fallout over it move on learn from your mistakes thats what makes us wise EXPERIENCE......!

I would say to the O.P... get the clutch fixed as per your other thread as well as the radiator changed (happened to me on my old classic) and you'll have it in the knowledge they're new and will last for your ownership of the car.

To the seller I would say it wasn't the best response saying you will refuse a partial refund which you previously discussed and agreed upon. Certainly does no favours to your character.

I would suggest those just throwing pathetic comments like "*****" about leave these two guys to amicably sort a solution out. Again, it makes you look immature and unable to hold reasoned debate
Well said me thinks........

I too am not siding with either but agree as i posted before that once the buyer gets these "not too major" issues fixed he will be safe in the knowledge the car will last the distance. The car will be savvy mate!

When testing a car, i would always load it up as hard as possible, being sensible in terms of not abusing the car. I have always done the same when selling my own car on a test drive with the prospective purchaser too. To not do so is absurd, you are trying to prove the car is good and can handle the load it is capable of producing.

Anyone who says take it easy on a test drive deserves to have that test drive terminated and the sale not to go ahead. (by that i mean take it easy on the mechanicals, not take it easy because you are driving like an idiot).

As to "Because of the nature of the chocolate engines, I don't permit test drivers to thrash it! You agreed?" that would have me running a mile, these engines are not chocolate, unless something is wrong with it.

not immature at all mate,it was a good price just a shame on the clutch, now needs replaced/skimmed flywheel and radiator.i just think that you were aware of the clutch being on its way out.atleast you can keep your good gesture £100. im not trying to slag anyone off but your attitude towards the whole situation stinks.

i took someone with me to also view the car and we both agreed that the way the seller went about the test drive thing was strange and it was to hide the fact that it will slip under load.

just be gratful it aint the big ends that have given up! all too often on here the engines go bang on transfer of ownership and then the expense really does go up.
you still love the car so forget about this and enjoy it.

Slagging each other off isnt going to get you both anywhere,if you enter a deal with each other then yes it just goes to show dont jump into something with both feet not knowing ****all about it as mentioned before a full test is very nessasary to find the odd fault here and there.

I had a guy (copper) come and buy an astra estate off me a few years ago, i thought he was taking the **** when he said could you leave me with the car for half an hour .
He went through it with a fine tooth comb checked everything conceivable and came back with a small list of barttering power of which he new the car was genuine and still paid the full asking price.

I RESPECTED HIM FOR THAT !

But knew i had nothing to hide as i was as honest as i could have been.

Guys move on !

If one of you is stating the clutch is goosed and the other is stating it's not why not find someone local, from the forum who can drive it, or observe and see if it is indeed slipping?

The other thing is clutches don't start to slip within minutes or miles, they do so over time progressively........

I always check a clutch by labouring it in fifth say 30-40mph then full throttle. Loads it up nicely without thrashing it at high revs.

I can understand op being dissapointed finding it slipping on way home but think offer of 100 is about right. Std full clutch kit is roughly 150 and labour to fit is the same. Op will then have brand new clutch known to be fitted as when buying second hand who knows how much life is left anyway?

If your worried about head gasket, get a quick and simple sniff test done.

Seen a few exhausts with small holes at start of tail pipe for fitting bungs, hole could be for this. If its elsewhere small holes can mess up emissions for mot.

Like has been mentioned previously, the classics are getting old and when looking for new car a clean shell should be number 1 priority imho.

Nightmare in my experience clutches slip for ages when driven carefully. Drove mine for a year before I got my **** in gear to change it Usually riding in 4th about 4k, but if you know it's there it's easy to drive through or indeed hide

I ended up replacing, header tank, rad, pipes, thermostat with mine within the first 6 months. Classics ain't cheap get a Lateral Exedy and enjoy the car. Life's too short to get bent out of shape with second guessing whether you got ripped or not

im not saying i got ripped off, just gutted that clutch has obvously been on its way out for quite sometime and seller didnt mention it,and test drove it in a way that it wouldnt do it(not full throttle).ill sort it.the reason it was only £4300 was because of this.by the time ive done the repairs it will still be a nice car for the money im not calling the seller a liar, just maybe didnt mention something that he was most probably aware of as car was in "daily use"

He knew and hes lucky you bought the car. Had it been me, I would be knocking on his door right now.

The issue here is that he didn't disclose the information.

I believe in karma though and maybe one day he will be on the receiving end.
