Maybe if fuel behaved like a ferrofluid:

then it might have an effect

OK thanks,
I am not defending these things or saying that they do work, just trying to unravel a bit more. There is some anecdotal evidence that the closer the magnetic field to the actual combustion the better the result. So a magnet just on a fuel line may only have a marginal effect, if any, but clamped on an injector may be significantly better.

Forget magnets, frequency holograms are where it's at. Try PowerBalance bands on your car; PowerBalance on your wheels to give your car better handling balance and strap a few around your engine to give you at least an extra 50BHP, you don't need a remap.

Don't forget to wrap them round your intercooler pipes to reduce intake temps by 75%

Oh ye of little faith........
No wonder Britain is in the doldrums
Once upon a time there was chap called Frank Whittle who came up with something called the jet engine
Rubbish they all said........
Before then there was the fella who said the earth was round

I use magnets in peoples mouths to keep various devices in place........for example..
http://www.prestige-dental.co.uk/technovent_25_393.html
And of course they influence nuclear magnetic spin.......as in MRI scans.
And that's about it really LOL

Armchair science
Mythbusters. maybe not the greatest scientific program in the world but entertaining, they tested fuel magnets on one of there episodes
Great Gas Conspiracy
Myth: Automakers and fuel suppliers are in collusion to keep us dependent on expensive gasoline and inefficient cars. There are many devices that one can use to cut your fuel consumption.
They got a carbureted car and a fuel-injected car to test several types of devices. The cars were placed on a dynamometer, which allows the car to drive without moving anywhere.
Test devices and additives:
•Fuel line magnets: working on the "principles of hydrodynamics," they are supposed to align the molecules for more efficient consumption.
•Acetone additive: supposed to make gasoline burn more efficiently
•300mpg 'super' carburetor
•Hydrogen fuel cell generator: flammable hydrogen gas produced by electrolysis. Adam labeled it "Gasbuster: Stickin' it to the Man"
They tested each car on the dynamometer at 35mph and 55mph with each 'device.'
Carburetor car:
•Baseline: 17mpg at 35mph and 25mpg at 55mph
•Magnets: exactly the same as baseline busted
•Acetone: 16.7mpg at 35mph and 24mpg at 55mph busted
•Super carb: much worse than baseline, 12mpg at 35mph and 17.7mpg at 55mph busted
Fuel-injected car
•Baseline: 19mpg at 35mph and 27mpg at 55mph
•Magnets: 18mpg at 35mph and 26mpg at 55mph busted
•Acetone: 18mpg at 35mph and 26mpg at 55mph busted

I only joined this forum in April, but was in Eastern Turkey and on a break in my work cycle. Boredome being a terrible thing, and the weather getting better in the U.K. I was considering two actions with the stupid fuel prices at home.
1. Get a diesel
2. Keep Subaru and improve the economy.
so trawled the net on what had been proven to work (sorry mythbusters but....)
I got a couple of headlining devices to see if there was any noticeable change.
Results, yes I am getting more punch from the engine, and better fuel consumption.
I have been pretty methodical in miles per tank, but the car has significantly better performance, so next project is trying methanol mixtures. Again this is an experiment into the unknown for me, my expectations are that like i eaw with acetone it will up the RON value of the fuel. However, unlike acetone it looks like I will have to use a lot of metanol per tankfull to have any effect!
I would be interested in any member feedback on methanol. Having seen the strimmer on methanol clip on youtube, I tried it with adding acetone on my two stroke strimmer. Dramatic increase in weed shredding with manic revving ability instantly seen. O.K. it was a recent purchase after the last one stubbornly refused to fire up, despite new plug, clean new fuel and fresh two stroke oil. But sorry to the armchair experts, acetone does work in a Subaru. Maybe like the hypermilers data, it is only working on cars with specific types of sensors in the ECU gubbins. As a control I left out the acetone for a couple of tanks, and the extra go went as did the fuel mileage improvements. And yes it returned by simply adding the acetone to the fuel again!

Not forgetting that tin based catalyst that Subaru tested and installed in every one of 1000 P1 models to help overcome problems associated with lower octane European fuel. Generally mocked by SN who of course know so much more than the Subaru technical guys. dl

Ferrocious
Started life as a mining engineer and worked at the forefront on ferrofluids in 1978-1981. There is a whole animal dependancy thing on migration and magnetic fields. At least working in Eastern Europe gives you an insight into a "can try something new mentality"

I found out that they shatter quite easily! We use them to "pin" stuff onto a white board and I was messing about with 2 small magnets and BAM they snapped together and then shattered into about 15 bits! LOL.
