Sensible thread imo
I have 2 diesel cars for D-T-D running, both do plus 50 MPG (one does 70+ on a good run) and yes, Pete is right, the modern diesel engine produces loads of torque which feels impressive but the modern diesel will never give the thrill of a petrol engine when it comes to fun factor. They dont rev and sound CRAP! Power delivery is short and sweet made better with tall gears.
I've just bought my RA and if I do as many miles in this as I did in my MR2 turbo, fuel costs wont bother me at all. I did 374 miles in my MR2 last year, 340 odd the year before lol.
I couldn't afford to run this as a daily driver though

I have just done exactly this. part ex'd my 55 plate sti ppp for a BMW 320d M Sport. Running costs on the sti were just getting silly as an everyday car. I am absolutely gutted as it was quite simply the most enjoyable car I have owned.
This and every government to come are just going to price these cars off the road in future years. They just want us all to conform and to run mundane boring crap like all these hybrid efforts. Enjoy your cars whilst you still can because in 5 to 10 years time.................

Always run 2 cars, used to just run a cheap 2nd car but doing 1000 miles a week at times i bought myself a 3 year old at the time diesel motor.
No way a diesel car is ever going to give the same thrill as the subaru, much more comfort and nearly 3 times the economy yes.
It's good to drive the impreza now and again on a decent stretch of road and enjoy driving instead of commuting.

to be honest i didnt enter into scooby ownership with any illusions of 40mpg i knew it would pass anything apart from a petrol station, but i dont have to use it as an every day car so fuel could be £2 a litre and i would still keep it for the enjoyment i get every time i drive it

PSLEWIS...........legend.
I have to say though. I am a little bit more sparing with the right foot these days.
I'm going to be £200 a month worse of from Feb thanks to my company and with the price of every day to day items costing more I may have to re-think in the future.

I commute on my bicycle as it is only 4 miles so the car hardly gets warm. trouble is with all the pants weather at the moment my disks have rusted through lack of use and now need replacing... Catch 22.

I now work from home 4 days a week which has reduced my costs of fuel substantially so can still keep my Scoob as a daily driver. If things change I would have to think about buying a second car for day to day

been there done that, I first had a Typr-R civic, was great when it was 77p a L
I then swapped for a diesal Audi A4 Sline great car best thing was Bose sound system, i ran that fort 3 years as it was a company car, i then left said company and bought an Astra VXR, because although Diesal is good for fuel and torque it just wasnt fast enough, this is something Diesal owners blinker themselves to, ooodles of torque for about 1000 RPMs.
Anyway, Astra was 3 door so i chipped it in for an Insignia SRI NAV with VXR kit 20 inch wheels as i had just had a new baby, 160 BHP diesal was fun, BUT that spark had gone in my life, ok fuel was good 700 to tank, but fun factor was ****.
I chipped that in for a WRX-S my First Subaru and My o My was i impressed
Pissed all over astra for drivability power everything, Interior a bit pants but still fantastic car, Fuel was now 115 L.
Always in my mind was STI STI, so i bought a new saloon and although i pay 130L now for Super i look forward to it everytime i get in it, its 5 quid more a full tank over normal petrol
My wifes old Astra 1.6 SXI did about 350 to the tank thats about 80 more than me, not much gain really considering fun factor.
I evenyually chipped hers in for a Zafira Elite 150 Diesal, the one thats got 10BHP more than yours PS , and thats great fun to drive does 450 to tank but doesnt have the spark.
Dont kid yaself Diesals are fun for sales reps and people who want to save cash, but for fun no way, ok 335D maybe but its rear wheel drive no fun in the snow
I wouldnt change her for anything, that granted people who dont earn much the fuel will hurt you more now, But i think there gonna Lobby parliment in the next week or 3 so it MAY i say MAY come down slowly.
EDIT
Can i just say though if my company didnt pay for my fuel i would probably think again though, there rates just cover my trips.
That said i drove from Leeds to Fife a while back and spent 150 quid on fuel, in my Diesal it would have been 50 quid, This is where it hits you. luckily if i do it again Zafira will be going

It's true .. I don't want to encourage people who are happy to drive gas guzzlers to switch - I would have to pay more then in taxes somewhere .... so, please, carry on paying a massive amount for your pleasures.
I owned an Impreza for 10 years and loved every moment of it ... but, I didn't buy another. I wanted to, but the price, quality, equipment and running costs were complete madness ..... despite my ability to pay for it all should I want to.
I have now owned the Diesel Honda for 7 months - have I missed the Scooby? Well, yes, twice.
Once when an Alfa accelerated off a roundabout and, despite my massive torque and power, I couldn't stay with him (maybe I was caught off guard) but I wished I had the Scooby under my right foot in that moment.
And another time was when the roads were thick with snow and ice .... obviously the AWD would have been better than huge torque through the front wheels.
Other than that, I can honestly say that the Honda has delivered on every level .. day after day after day .. from the dual climate control to the torque figures, from the 55 mpg to the overtaking power, from the superbly built interior to the automatic wipers, from the stunningly good looks to the huge boot space.
Time have moved on, the time to have had an Impreza Turbo was 1990 - 2010 ... 20 years of being the best car money could buy .... of that there is no doubt. But now? Nah - it just doesn't add up anymore - everything comes to an end.
To those who love their Impreza's despite the costs, I know where you are and I respect that - but, truly, times are different and diesels are amazing.

Hands are a little better ... hence me typing again ...
Did we ever think we would see £1:34 a Gallon!?
To the poster above who thinks the diesel would be a disappointment - my diesel has 340Nm of Torque ...... it delivers on the fun scale every bit as much as an Impreza, but returns 55mpg. That cannot be argued against.

I changed the scooby for the 330d mid last year. Don't regret it for a second. I have similar power, more torque. Far greater refinement, and something that is a pleasure on motorways. Oh and double the economy.
If I want more smiles per mile, I will use one of my bikes. They have a grin factor bigger than any scooby I've been in.

a survey i read in a mag stated thad the owners of brand new diesels need thier head read they never get the prive difference back , and this was before the price increases , a bmw 330 owner will have to do 388000 miles to break even on the price difference over the petrol model . even a mini 1 diesel owner would have to do 89000 miles to break even . so unless you buy secondhand the price difference between the petrol vs diesel model cannot be recouped by someone doing normal miles . all it does is proves people will bend over to pick up 5p and put thier **** through a 50quid window

.... made you think about Subaru ownership?
I went to a Diesel Honda in June 2010 from an Impreza of 10 years .... not for fuel costs really, just that Subaru had lost ground and been left floundering with unsuitable products which no-one wanted anymore.
Now I see that Diesel is £1:34 a litre, so SUL would be about the same, I am relieved that I jumped ship when I did ......... I'm getting over 50mpg, but the cost still hurts.
At a mpg in the high teens/low twenties .... it would be unbearable!!
But, you couldn't even sell if you wanted to - no-one wants a gas guzzler these days ..... what do you do?
Are you about to jump ship?

?EH? Weird post that above ..... ??????
Anyway, the question was whether people are thinking twice about the wisdom of such a vehicle as the Impreza ..... especially as it's not just fuel which is expensive - add Insurance costs and Road Tax .... all this when the Impreza is hardly a luxury type car.
I bought a diesel, not purely for the better mpg, but because it was simply a better drive than a petrol version of the car I had decided upon ..... a Road Tax of £110 was an additional benefit, as was a refund on my Insurance Premium of my 10 year old Impreza!
The smile per miles is a great part of Scooby ownership - but those smiles don't actually have to cost what they do with a Scooby ..... I get them much cheaper now

Hi Pete
As a daily driver - given the costs. There is no way these days I would have a Subaru.
I now see it as a second car. I use it and enjoy it but it isnt my main A to B transport.
You will often find me on a push bike or in my girlfriends diesel when it is tucked away.
Smiles on my face - the only thing that ever came close was my 200hp supercharged MX5. That was the only cheaper car, from a running cost point of view, that was almost as fun as the scoob.
For duller A to B everyday transport yes a modern diesel is a very good bet.

See, my plaything is a MX5 ..... that puts a smile on my face - not least because it's value is going UP!
My Scooby gave me great pleasure ...... but, my modern diesel does come so close to it as to not really warrant any discussion. That's why I raise the question as to why - given the massive costs - anyone would choose a Scooby over a modern diesel ...... now that the new diesels will deliver the same feeling of power and well-being.
