Has the high cost of fuel ...

I have a Corsa C for comutting which returns about 400 miles to a tank, scooby is of thh road for the winter and will be used a gain in the summer, for weekend use and when i fancy a drive in it.
At the moment it's saving me £70 a month in insurance costs and easily £100 a month in petrol costs.

My Scooby gave me great pleasure ...... but, my modern diesel does come so close to it as to not really warrant any discussion. That's why I raise the question as to why - given the massive costs - anyone would choose a Scooby over a modern diesel ...... now that the new diesels will deliver the same feeling of power and well-being.
Swings and roundabouts with costs really.

See, my plaything is a MX5 ..... that puts a smile on my face - not least because it's value is going UP!

Glad to hear you have found a car that suits your age and driving style

PEDRO,
Great to hear from you after so long.
You have (as always) a point.
I have been running alternate tanks on 95/97 Ron.
Scoob doesn't ;like 95 Ron.
Went to get some V Poer yesterday, £1.26 for 95 Ron, £1.29.9 for Deiseil.
V Power was £1.34.9!!
I have to say it runs great.
Looked at Subaru Desil Legacy/Impreza, couldn't do it.
BTW, Wifelet wants me to take her somewhere expensive this Saturday night.
I have decided to spoil her & take her to a petrol station.
Mind how you go Perdro.

The future is Diesel (until Electric improves in range) - Petrol is dead, as is the car which does less than 30mpg!

Pete,
At least with a Diesel you won't sound or look a **** by not taking the revs over 3k! You have AT LAST found your perfect car.
Not sure why you sold your Scoob or never bought another..... I bet you were the only person in the world to consistantly manage 60mpg in your Classic!!

if thats the case why are all the imports coming over now ie bongo and all the7 seaters campers all v6 petrols i was told because diesel is no longer used in japan because of the emmissions being so **** . i wouls also love to know how much extra yours was compared to the same petrol model extra so i could work out how many miles you have got to do to recoup the difference in purchase price . example say the diesel model was £1340.00quid dearer thats a 1000 litres devide by 4.55 = 219 gallons of fuel average 55mpg = 12045miles but hang on lets say the petrol does 45mpg thats a extra 10mpg over the petrol 10x12045 thats 120450miles just to get your money back , not taking into account petrol is 9pence per litre cheeper, to clarifie 55mpg =11.08 pence per mile ,, petrol 40mpg = 14.02 pence per mile 13045quid devided by 3pence = 434833miles to get your money back in simple terms you car will never in your ownership return your money back SIMPLES

Pete, how much would you have expected your old classic to have depreciated in the last 7 months? I'd expect very little as they have already hit rock bottom. Now, compare that to the depreciation on your new 7 month old derv. The difference will buy an awful lot of petrol!

Times changed in those 10 years, as they always do.
I went to buy another Impreza and took out a STi ... blindingly fast car and would be great fun to drive on empty roads - BUT - £950 1st year Road Tax - 18 mpg max. - cheap plastics - crap interior - poor equipment levels - no room in the boot for a dog - £27,000 - road tax will be crippling each and every year - no secondhand market for these cars and looks like a Focus (but not as good).
At the end of the day I bought a car for £10,000 less, which gives me 99% of the Scooby thrills, delivers 55 mpg, costs £110 Road Tax, is highly desireable on the secondhand market, is quality built, high equipment levels, superb interior, stunningly good looks, room for the dog and more Torque than a Scooby = more pulling power = faster overtaking (when you really need it).
So, being the highly intelligent person I am ............. in the race for my new car money, the Honda won by a country mile.

It's not simply about money now ... it's futureproofing ... I wanted to change, I was going to change, the choice was made for many reasons - future costs being one.

It's faster when overtaking than any Scooby ..... that's when the power really counts - not 0-60 times ......
The petrol engine is dead - certainly one returning less than 30 mpg!!

Your point is quite correct - my old Scooby would not have lost anything to speak of ... yet, my Honda has lost at least £3,000.

I drive a new shape Mondeo as my every day car.... namely because I drive over 500miles a week and that "intelligently" makes sense.... for the Diesel part at least. But being quite honest it is one of the best cars I have ever owned for long hauls. In fact I have owned Diesels as my main mode of transport for nigh on 16yrs (mostly VW's)...... that has never stopped me having the "toy" being a high performance marque.
You can't compare the driving of something like a well tuned petrol engine for the "thrills" against anything mainstream Diesel. I should know I have driven enougn performance cars and of course Diesel's. There are a few exceptions, but the Honda is not one of them! If you can compare them, then you did not buy in to the performance marque originally for the same reasons many others do.
True.... you may of moved on and your priorities changed, but that does not mean that will be the same for others.
Anyway, this is going well off topic and needless to say I don't care about the price of petrol. I say if you think it costs too much, then you can't afford to run the car and you should sell it. If that is the case, than it is arguable that you could never really afford to run the car in the first place.

Bought my Scooby in September when petrol was increasing. I spent everything i had getting my dream car and Im certainly not considering selling. Imo diesels are boring, regardless of how much torque it might have, i just dislike them. I use my Impreza daily and couldnt be happier also take my mum shopping every week. I pay my insurance and tax each year so might as well use the car instead of leaving it parked up...and i only work 16 hours in poundland lol

No not put me off at all im looking forward to being an scooby owner soon. And it will be my daily drive to .
I have a high powerd car at moment and can only get a way with its fule cost as my milage has dropped by 300 miles per week so im saving lots of fule so i can have a scooby as my main car.
It would cost me a lot more to keep it as a second car and have to pay out for an extra car, insurance, tax fule. As i sometimes only now do 25 milrs per week now comuting . If i did more on the commuting i would strongly think of having scoob as second car.
I think it depends on peoples curcumstances.

I'm heartened to read that many people don't care about the cost as the driving experience is above price ..... or, is the reason more sinister? Is it because the Impreza cannot be sold nowadays?
I'm sure you are all in awe of the 340Nm I can muster, therefore embarrassing many Scoobies in the important 30-70 MPH range, yet still get 550 miles from a tank of fuel ....

A 1998 Impreza is going to be so clapped out that it would struggle to get 14.1 secs!!!
I'm sure they didn't test any Honda Diesels ... when were the tests carried out ... under what conditions?
I am talking real world, where the only view that an Impreza sees of my car in flight is the rear ..... granted at the lights he would show me a clean set of exhausts from standing. But, whilst moving, at 30 - I would be GONE ......... it's just how it is these days.
