Has the high cost of fuel ...

You cannot be serious....highly ammusing but crazy talk....i had a 530DSe BMW 221bhp, and huge torque, and while i will say it was fine up a hill at these speeds, i will also say it was 18mths old when i got it, had 18k miles, and smash the throttle the only thing i could see in my rear view mirror was a mass of black smoke from the un refined filth they call diesel. If your's does'nt do this now, it WILL.
Also as a foot note to this amusing thread, diesel IS a filthy fuel and in terms of refinery is MUCH easy to create than Petrol. However why does it cost more than petrol???
...Well because it uses (ltr per ltr) a lot more crude oil than petrol does, as its not as refined as petrol. Oil is very precious, as we all know. So what your driving is a filthy, slow burning, planet killer that uses FAR more crude oil to run. You think Petrol is pricey, wait and see what happens to crude oil rich diesel, when the arabs run low in 5yrs!
The future is petrol @ 80mpg, not oil rich Diesel @ 55mpg.

Not to mention having to change gear a gazillion times then run out of revs when you're half way past!
I drove from N Wales to West Mids a couple of weeks back in my Scoob (14 years old btw).
There were 4 artics in a row on the A41 followed by an looks-the-same-as-any-other-car Audi diesel thingy. Nice straight clear road so said Audi diesel starts to overtake, I follow Getting to the top of his rev range and power band he duly pulls in after the last artic. I, still having bags more useable power left, carry on past him too Statistics are all well and good on paper, but in the real world things are a whole lot different (coming from an EX diesel driver)

Im getting 29.4 off boost on 110 mile journeys daily, using V-Power on a 312HP 365LB per FT scoob. I drive like you til I need the power, then i'd leave most cars eating my dust (including smelly, noisy, polluting diesels). Stick THAT in your exhaust PSLewis and smoke it.
Im getting a smaller PETROL car that will do 55MPG to keep my daily journey costs down, so stick ya honda diesel where the sun dont shine.

Not sure of the 30-70 times on my '98 but I have only x1 timed 0-60 which was 3.5sec & 0-122.5 in 11.6 secs. Not too shabby for a clapped out classic. I'd imaging your new derv would be very close to 60mph in 11.6secs.

I think perhaps it would be much better if they doubled the price of fuel straight away if that was to mean that all the sad ba**ards that drive diesel vehicles would have mental breakdowns and sell up and buy push bikes. It would be worth the price to be rid of these moaning deluded fools , tight as a ducks **** the lot of them , it would be worth paying for quieter roads with less traffic . So get the price up and lets get rid of all the tight wads that moan on and on and on and on about the price of fuel and the benefits of driving a diesel . If you can`t afford it sell up , shut up and f**k off !.
On second thoughts lets quadruple the cost of fuel and remove all the poor people and diesel dummies from the roads completely , and we could also remove the need for water shortages and hose pipe bans by collecting their tears as they cry , bleat and moan incessantly to anybody who will listen.

?EH? Weird post that above ..... ??????
Anyway, the question was whether people are thinking twice about the wisdom of such a vehicle as the Impreza ..... especially as it's not just fuel which is expensive - add Insurance costs and Road Tax .... all this when the Impreza is hardly a luxury type car.
I bought a diesel, not purely for the better mpg, but because it was simply a better drive than a petrol version of the car I had decided upon ..... a Road Tax of £110 was an additional benefit, as was a refund on my Insurance Premium of my 10 year old Impreza!
The smile per miles is a great part of Scooby ownership - but those smiles don't actually have to cost what they do with a Scooby ..... I get them much cheaper now

drive all week long in my transit for work (evil hgv is the next step) i work my *** of so i can drive my scooby at the weekends my sti driven half and half will give me 250 miles of pure smiles per tank it looks good goes like **** off a shovel and sounds awesome. in answer to the question iv just got rid of a golf gttdi a: because i missed my scooby and b: i couldnt bare to bring my self to say im a tight **** diesel driver

The roads are full of diesel cars with drivers who believe they have a 'quick' car. Some of them even dare to carry this belief onto a Subaru forum.
I loved my scooby and still miss it at times but diesels have to be saluted im afraid. The fact we are even comparing diesel's to scoobys is impressive enough

Who gives a **** how many miles you get out of a tank!!
Car ownership to me, for something like an Impreza, is about so much more than facts, figures and costs.
A lot of this can be down to circumstances.... so don't feel you have to justify to yourself or us that because you can't afford to run an impreza every day (or any other performance car for that matter), does not actually make you any less a person for it.
You are happy to have a car that (like it's image), means you have curled your toes up and put your pipe and slippers on. There is no shame in getting old and it comes to all of us in the end. Luckily I still have plenty of years left until I have to think about this.

I can honestly say yes I do and have thought about this very thing for months now. I am not short of a few quid but I have done nothing but eye up BMW diesel M Sports for weeks! LOL. Now my mate, who also has a guzzling VXR, got his smashed up by some muppet in the snow whilst it was parked up. Anyway, he ended up with a BMW 320 D M Sport hire car and loves it. torques galore, comfort (ahhh, whats that? lol), good ride and as we all know 58 to the gallon on a long motorway run when sat at a constant speed does not matter what you bloody drive, I dont want to spend at 24 mpg when I can have 60.
I have had mine 7 years from new in 2003. I can honestly say I am looking to change.
My biggest problem is selling mine, I aint a clue what to do.
I do have one concern though, I love AWD. Snow is nothing to my car with winter tyres on. Do I fancy a rear wheel drive in snow? No way, they are crap.

Good to see you back Pete
I have the best of both worlds, Derv Mondeo, 130 bhp & 60 mpg on a run, its quiet, has a great audio system & is comfy & not that bad to drive.
When I want to, I've got my spec D for a bit of fun or a trip to the nurburgring & my wife has an Ibiza TDi sport that I bought her. A great little car to drive. am I bothered about the cost of fuel, am I ****. My next purchase will either be a share in or a whole light aircraft, am I bothered about the cost of Avgas 100LL - no!
Do I think its expensive, yes, do I think the government is taking the ****, yes. Do I actually think there is anything I can do about it, other than **** & moan, no.
So to sum up, petrol is expensive, I can afford to buy it, so can a lot of other people. I don't use my gas guzzler that much. The End.

Ooooops, I seem to have rattled a few cages ..... that's not like me
Really I was just wondering whether you are all happy paying through the nose to drive a car which has had its day, rather than driving something modern which delivers the same goods and smiles without the crippling costs.
Some of you confuse having the money to spend on a Scooby with using the choice not to. Most of you know that finance is of little worry to me - but, how I spend it is!
I was a diesel hater until last May ... really, couldn't have given them a second look - until, quite by accident, I took a Honda diesel out .... WOW!! Really blew me away, the instant 'on tap' power (where the Scooby has to spool up) - brilliant!
Yes, I hit the wall ..... at that point I didn't want it anymore - but, due to my experience I quickly learned when to change gear (some of you seem to have a problem adapting, I didn't).
If you can drive, I acknowledge that many kiddies under 30 can't these days, a Diesel is a very potent vehicle.
I do suspect that, if you could sell a Scooby, a lot of you would have jumped ship. using it as a weekend plaything sounds pretty good, however - if the Insurance is bearable.
So, in the final analysis, I suppose that Diesels are for those who can drive properly and a petrol is for those for whom the gearbox is a thing of mystery and complication?

Made me laugh. You have no idea. My 330d's power is more Accessible than my old scooby. Any gear pulls. How does an impreza perform before the turbo kicks in?

Then in the interest of backtracking further PSLEWIS explained "all petrol drivers are not competant", and thats why all of SN STOPPED POSTING ON THIS THREAD and moved on with their lives. PSLEWIS on the other hand had children with his diesel Honda, and they lived happily ever after.............the end.

Top post Pete!
You seem to bang on about how great your Honda is, no doubt its the right car for you. To tell the truth I love my derv Mondeo, it does everything & I don't give a crap about where I park it.
For me, a performance car is a petrol drinker, Diesel technology has come on a long way, but its still not got the same characteristics as a petrol sports car.

A 330d may keep up with a basic 220 bhp Impreza once rolling but give an Impreza 250 bhp plus and it will have the 330d for breakfast
