Sure.

But what about that awful story last winter where those tobogganing teen girls ploughed into barbed wire at great speed and died.

No amount of health and safety , risk assessments etc can take stupidity into account.

I'm regretting that flippant post already - I came to remove it (or at least add a smiley or two) but I see people have quoted it already.

I think the point I was trying to get across was that Darwin is alive & well..... it breeds out muppets!

Welcome to life.

We are animals and animals die, hurt themselves and get injured.

By far and away the biggest human weakness is our constant attempts to fully control the chaotic environment that we live in. It can never be controlled.

Not sure what you've subsequently said but your first post very much suggests you favour the approach.

And to answer the question you posed I'd take them to hospital and get them patched up. I'd only ever take 'action' against someone if I felt they had been severely negligent, which directly led to an injury.

What blew my mind is that I was talking to the wife about this at lunch time and I recalled that in 4th year at school we got to do what every Tech Studies class got to do in 4th year. The teacher would dig an old scooter out of the shed at the back of technical block and we'd take turns to ride it around the playing field. No helmet, no pads, no parental permission and, for most of us, no experience of riding a powered vehicle before. The thing was probably good for 20-30mph and, being kids, we'd open it up on the straights.

It was a great laugh and probably quite dangerous. I doubt very much that happens these days and, tbh, I feel sorry for the kids of today. Risk management means that they will miss out on a lot of experiences in life.

Anyway, you know the really scary thing? I left school in 1996, meaning I was in fourth year in 1994. We are only taking 16 years ago here

Actually, I'm off to create a thread with a poll, I'm curious about something.

Oh don't get me wrong - I agree with you both.

But it's precidents or incidents like that where you can see why the H&S Executive gets involved.

To be fair, they were teen girls - they obviosuly froze (pardon the pun) when they realised they were out of control (rather than bailing out off the side of the tobaggan, etc).

it was on school grounds as far as I could see.

Ah, that's where the inspiration for your poll came from!

Basically, life in general is full of unsafe situations and we have to learn how to deal with them.
