I agree it's a difficult situation for both sides.

Unfortunately, we live in a world where "trust" is a hollow word these days...

I'm getting well and truly outvoted here, so I concede I'm 'wrong'.

The majority have it.

Tell the buyer to turn up before the bank closes.

last car I sold, I was paid for in cash.

but I got to know the chap on facebook, had a lot of conversations and emails with him.

I wanted him to know I was a very genuine seller too.

he even gave me cash before the purchase to get it serviced (to ensure car was spot on).

He then turned up in a £140K Ferrari to inspect it. (I think they are that about new and it looked newish to me)

one of the nicest and most genuine chaps I've ever dealt with. No airs and graces. lovely man.

only worrying part was walking to the bank with it.

How much are you talking about?
You could ask him to bring bank sealed notes. I flogged a motorhome a couple of years ago and the buyer paid cash and it was bank sealed. I've never really worried that much, when I bought my last car a couple of months ago I paid cash. The guy just gave it to his Mrs to count, funny thing was she then asked my Mrs to help count some for her.
Aren't some banks open Saturday morning anyway?

only talking 6k... I say ONLY lol it would buy a nice rolex deepsea sea dweller lol

trouble is the only HSBC open saturday is in the city centre open till dinner for counter sales!
getting into ton means getting there, parking up, walking to the bank and then queuing with a load of nesbits and students paying in or asking stupid question!

I'll try ripping each notes silver bar to see if its fake or not lol

Lloyds TSB branches are open on Saturdays.

Depending on the banks involved they may both by part of the FPS (Faster Payment Scheme) where a transfer happens on the same day and usually in the case of say LTSB within 2 hrs failing that and it should work with cash you can goto your local bank branch and usually request a CHAPS payment is completed, this however will probably cost £25.

TBH if someone can with 000's in cash to pay for a car I would want it banked that day as they may come back later to take it back....

Try the Arnold branch.

Or, and this really isn't taking much in the way of common sense, drive to town, meet him off the train, take the cash off him, walk to the bank on Listergate or Clumber Street, whichever is open longer, then walk to King/Queen Street and jump on the 44/45 bus home.

Their website says all three branches are open 10:00 - 15:00.

I sold my scooby for cash on a Saturday to a Scottish guy. He paid all £15k in Scottish 20's. All I did was count it. Wouldn't know a fake Scottish note anyway!
Took the lot to the bank and all they did was count it, didn't check any of the notes.

As you will have his details & address(for you to send the V5C off to DVLC) I wouldn't worry.

Just get him to drive you to the bank with the cash.

Keep the key until the cash has been counted, though

Just meet him at the station and do the test drive that ends near the bank. Can't be too hard

But all you have to do is phone him and tell him your plan to go to the bank. he'll hardly turn up with bent notes knowing this. In fact its highly unlikely any of the cash is dodgy whether you tell him or not TBH. Then just count it in your home and sod the bank

Ask the buyer which bank he got the money out of, take him to an ATM for that bank, get him to show you printout showing his withdrawal of the money. Ok he could have real money in one pocket and fake in the other but seems unlikely.

You can`t expect a buyer to hand over say £12k in cash to Joe Public and then have to wait a few days for his car, i know i wouldn`t hand over any money without coming away with the car, keys and logbook etc.

What about from the buyers point of view ? Its easy to stage a house to say you live there when you don`t, just get a house on a months rent then sod off with the buyers money and move onto your next victim in another town or city and repeat the process until you can`t do the scam anymore.

I`m not saying this is a common occurance but it does happen and its got to happen to someone, personally i`d want the buyer to come with me to the bank if he`s paying by cash and pay the money in, when its all counted and in my account then i`d hand over the keys and paperwork etc.

God how did selling a car become so dramatic!!

Count the cash , get a uv light /pen , job done.

None of this taking it to the bank , seeing his statements. He's bringing cash to make it simple and easier not a crb check

Some people seem terrified of cash these days, but its not hard to spot a fake!

Just have a look on the BoE website for the info sheet on £20 notes. And remember only new ones, no old notes

I am sure kids these days get their pocket money by Direct Debit... shhesh!

Exactly!!! Being from NI and having bought a few cars in England I have had all sorts of hassle before!! Fake money is normally very easy to spot and a random check with a pen and or a light will be sufficient. It seems like cash has become stramge to so many people these days, I know people who never seem to have any money on them, just cards. While obviously cards are handy I still always carry about £20 in cash, just in case I need it. He is coming with cash to make it easier and quicker for everybody, if you went and bought a similar price car at a dealers, would you expect a dealer to take you to the bank and things like this?

You guys need to remember in NI we have various kinds of pikey notes as well as BoE. Two of our banks produce £100 notes as well.

This - it is there so blind people can tell if a note is fake.

Anyone with half a brain can spot a fake (no offence). Real notes are not printed on paper, it is actually nearer to linen which is why they can go through the wash and a bus ticket can't. There is a big difference when placed side by side with a real one, a fake is always on paper and it is just totally different.

As someone else said though, the phosphorus in washing powder will make a washed note glow like a fake though.

I can understand people getting one fake or getting one in a big wedge but seriously, count each note and run your finger down the Bank of England bit and you'll be fine. Any you think are dodgy try to tear through the silver strip. Real notes have it sewn in. Fakes (again because they are paper) just have bits laid on top.

Cash is about as safe as you can get!
