Just thought i mention my last run-in with the law. It was late at night, id just had some mods done to my car and hadnt had chance to really give it some so i found quiet straight road with no houses about slowed to a stop then blasted up to about 90 only to pass a police car sitting in a side road at. He gave chase straight away so not being a fool i pulled over to face the music. After a deserved bollocking for driving like that in a 40 zone, i Think i was lucky not to get any points or fine, just a section 59 on my car for a year which has just passed. I must admit it did slow me down and make me think twice before planting it.
Being polite i think defo helps but at the end of the day it depends on the copper and his current mood.

I think what this thread proves beyond "all reasonable doubt" if you'll excuse the pun is that: if you project an attitude in life, you'll get one back!

No different with the police. If you're speeding, you're committing an offence (and we've all exceeded the limit from time to time) If you get caught, well, tough luck. You're in the wrong, not the police who are just doing their job!

This does not mean the police are entitled to be rude or aggressive to you; at the end of the day they are public servants, but they are also human beings and dislike being giving them stick for just doing their jobs every bit as much as you would! If you're getting stick that you feel you don't deserve; be the bigger man about it - you might find that showing a bit of humility about things calms them right down. The only certainty is that just having a go back is certainly not going to help your case!!!

Providing you've not exceeded the limit by a significant margin, the officers do have discretion in whether they report you; they can just settle for a word in your ear. Your attitude will play a large part in whether that is considered to be an appropriate course of action.

My advice to the OP would be loose the attitude, go to court, man up and admit that you were in the wrong and were in a foul mood because of a bad day at work and apologise to the officers involved and to the court for wasting their time and, whatever the outcome, at least you can walk out of the place with your head held high! I'd suggest you'll end up with 6 points.

Yup I think I'm with Tony & NS on this, insofar as to say the Police do and should have discretion over minor infringements.

I've had them be a bit rude initially and on another occasion pretty civil. I've always been polite myself because it's surely worth a few minutes of indignity for the potential to avoid a formal penalty.

they may have been a bit rude if they had just cleared up the mess from an accident where someone was speeding and caused a loss of life etc
you just never know
admitedly they should show some professionalism, but you just dont know what they may have been thru

ive had two incidents with police, one where the policeman was rude as hell, and told me to fo... he was reversing down the other side of the road with the road blocked off in front and we werent sure what was going on so was tryin to ask for advice...

and another time, when i nipped onto a roundabout (copper was waitin on one of the exits i drove past, and i had seen him)
i had to give it a few beans as it was a busy roundabout and id been there a while, unfortunately my CTR made a very cool loudish noise at 6k rpm up...
he pulled me over, had a quiet word to calm down and off he went

just treat them with some respect imo, even if some times they can be rude..

+1 on most of the above, wise words from all. For me though a Police man/ women could be a narrow minded ***** in general, the entrance exam does'nt mention "are you a tool", in the same way they could be a christian to the max, who lets everyone off for their own karma,,,,thats what does'nt sit well with me. Enforce the law, dont endevour to create your own version of it.

I have'nt been knicked for speeding in 13 years, not because i have been polite, not because i never speed, but because i have'nt been caught doing it.

Its a tough job and the money they earn for it would probably make me a ***** at times too, certainly explains why bribery seems to work, even if it is just verbal bribery and being polite

Not being caught works well too!

As for police officers sometimes being ******, well, some people are ****** so some police officers will be ******.

If EVERYONE who ever got stopped for speeding got a ticket instantly and no one was ever "let off" do you think it would be a safer place?..maybe?

In my minds eye the Police have no more right to let off someone who is guilty of a crime, than i do to tell the Police "I DO NOT ACCEPT YOUR LAWS AS I NEVER SIGNED ANYTHING TO SAY I DID".....Fuuny world ah!..

Still i'm in the freemasons so i can do whatever the fek i like, and a hand shake gets me off....sounds fair to all>!
Ok lets put it another, if your an **** and act a **** to wards them you could end up getting more points.

When i get stopped Im polite to the officers even if they aren't towards me. I wont denie it its hard to be polite back if they are being arsey towards me. Ive been pulled for silly things and just been told off and that's it. if I was an **** towards them and gave them attitude Im pretty certain I would of ended up with points. I guess some of us are more grown up than others. End of the day I have a clean licence and I intend to try and keep it that way. I know some coppers think they are the dogs b0locks and act like real ***** but ive met a few decent ones as well.

......... is a dick! .......... reckless, arrogant, stupid dick. And......... are pussies. And ........ is an *******. Pussies don't like dicks, because pussies get fcuked by dicks. But dicks also **** ********: ******** that just want to crap on everything. Pussies may think they can deal with ******** their way. But the only thing that can **** an ******* is a dick, with some *****. The problem with dicks is: they crap too much or **** when it isn't appropriate - and it takes a ***** to show them that. But sometimes, pussies can be so full of crap that they become ******** themselves... because pussies are an inch and half away from *** holes. I don't know much about this crazy, crazy world, but I do know this: If you don't let us **** this *******, we're going to have our dicks and pussies all covered in crap

Fill in the blank spaces with the relevant people.

Dave

Believe it or not, some stolen cars are identified before they are reported stolen due to stop checks.
Or would you rather complain that the Police do nothing when you report your car stolen?
It's their attitude that I don't like. It takes them 2 minutes to work out that I am the legal driver but even after that they have an attitude problem.

went to court and the judge kicked it out as the was no evidence or proof as there was no independant witness my word against theres, thats why traffic cars have cameras in them.

Hmm almost double the speed limit

Ok it sounds like you had an exception to the rule, and lets not forget no matter what the outcome of the Police, if you do get taken to court then there is always the discretion of the Judge.

Yeah, in Scots Law corroboration is the key. Two cops following another car in a normal panda...say their speedo says 60 in a 30. Can report the driver for speeding or careless etc.
Cop car is then checked by traffic on speed runs using a calibrated device and you'll get a result of speedo = indicated speed + or - xxx mph.
A speedo might be 3 or 4mph out from the indicated speed but it wouldn't obviously be loads out.

From the TV programs I have seen I have to say there appears to be an increasing arrogance among the traffic police. Discretion and common sense is being exercised less and the 'letter of the law' is what many of them are hiding their bolshy attitudes behind. I got stopped a few years back for my wife not wearing a seat belt. When they approached they noticed that she was wearing it (she had been wearing it the whole time). They just said they couldnt see it so as far as they are concerned she wasnt wearing it and must have put it on quickly. A £30 fine was her reward for denting their pride.

i used to get stopped a lot when i was younger when i used to be out driving all night with mates. all of the traffic police that have stopped me have been polite and got on with well.... (even the 1 that hid his car in a side street and stood behind a bush and did me for speeding! (41 in a 30) but there has been 1 or 2 of the normal coppers that have been arrogant dix straight from the start, and if ive done nothing wrong il be arrogant with them back, i wont lick their bum hole to try and be nice to a ***** just cos hes got a badge.
talk and treat others as youd expect to be treated... that goes for the coppers too!
