although the insurance company states that it should be stripped only but there is no law stopping you so you can buy it a put it back on the road as long as it has a vic check and a mot i know someone who has a bmw 535d cat b and was repaired to a very high standard and you wouldnt know its been in an accident however there are a load of people who dont repair cars properley so i would look at it but would speak to the police and dvla as its had a marker against it for crushing

NO response from the gargae which really pi**ed me off, just proves their sneakyness really. I did get another reply from East Riding Trading Standards which Ive copied below. It seems that because the ad has 'on v car' written in it, this makes the ad and the car all ok! I wonder how many innocent people will miss that??? Here is the reply:
I have made further enquiries with the Vehicle Inspectorate. Again, I have
been informed that a Cat B can be repaired although a repair would require
a full re-shell. This could account for the colour change. The person I
spoke to told me that re-shelling tends not to happen very often nowadays
because the labour is so expensive but he said in the case of a relatively
new and/or expensive vehicle it is sometimes still done. You will know
far better than me but I gather the current price for this model in in the
£30k bracket so it would seem that even 4 years ago it would have been in
the late 20ks and at 2 years old might have been worth repairing.
I was informed that following the write-off in 2008 the vehicle has had
two MOT's carried out at two different garages in different areas in 2009
and 2010. It did fail the 2009 MOT but these were not on major
structural/body work issues that could be connected with a questionable
repair. I was told that the VIC check carried out in September 2009 is
carried out on cars after being written off and repaired. The person I
spoke to told me that in addition to checking the identity of the vehicle
the repair work would also be looked at.
The advertisement on the website does state that the vehicle is on VCAR

Quite frightening really ... some mug could save themselves £20 by missing out the HPI check & go home with a disaster zone of a car
TX.
PS
See what you mean re the price though ... Cat B should be half price surely

I have a friend with an 06 Blobeye STI UK. He also gets stung with the road tax because of it. He has to pay the ridiculous amount a year Hawkeye STI owners have to (I think may be £400 a year but don't quote me on that).
