I separated from my wife a couple of years ago & moved back to London as that is where my work is & no longer any point in commuting.

Since I had originally left London (1999), most of my friends had moved on/got married/left London & all my other friends were "ours" & in Suffolk, so other than work colleagues I didn't really know that many people in London and the opportunity to meet new people was limited. I'm also not the sort of person to just wander into a bar and attempt to chat someone up.

So I thought I would try Internet Dating. I joined match.com, finally worked up a profile, found some pictures of me that were "ok" and started writing emails. Most were ignored but sometimes I got a "view" then I got my first email. Unfortunately no romance came of that but I made a very good friend, who I still see. After the first email came in, things got easier and I went on some dates & over the course of time "hooked up" with a couple of nice ladies. For whatever reason, it didn't work out with them and we went our separate ways.

Over about 15 months, I met a variety of people from many different backgrounds and had (on the whole) a very good time. I have made a number of very good friends as well, which has made the whole process even more worthwhile. There have been some scary people too, some scammers, some gold-diggers, some decidedly odd people, some people who were just not my cup of tea, in fact, the whole smorgsbord of life is represented there online.

In May of last year, I met my girlfriend. She thought she would dip a toe in online dating & browsed my profile, so I had sent her an email. She was very shy and nervous about it but we started emailing regularly, found we had a lot in common and eventually she sent me a picture and agreed to meet on a date. We got on like a house on fire, hit it off and we're now living together. She is stunning, sexy, caring and I would normally have said totally out of my league but we absolutely click on so many levels, its quite un-nerving sometimes, we are both extremely happy.

There's no way on earth I would normally have met her were it not for online dating. I've been quite open about it and its amazing how many people within my office have also tried/are trying it as well, mostly with positive results. Its like everything on the internet - treat it cautiously as not everything is as it seems but there are genuine people out there looking for the same as you, so definitely worth trying.

brilliant story -- I wouldn't have a problem with it tbh, and I suspect it has become a lot more mainstream in the last couple of years

A colleague at work tried it recently and did get a few dates -- but got **** rot too, which took the shine of it (in every respect)

I tried Match.com, had a few dates with some nice girls, some real timewasters on there too, that just want a free (expensive) dinner, at my expense. Taking them for a cup of coffee at Starbucks & a chat usually weeded out the "takers"

Met my Wife at Salsa dancing classes, much better IMHO, I got to see people in the flesh, learn a new skill & have a nice social night out with the possibility of meeting someone new & interesting every week.

We have been together nearly 5 years & married for nearly 1 year, nicest person I've ever met!

Mind you, she's lucky to have me..

I'm not one to blow my own trumpet and the vibe is that you need to be really fake to get the initial contact going. I didn't like that.

I disagree. Sometimes it can downheartening to get so few replies to so many sent emails but the feedback I got from ladies I have spoken to about it is that they, in turn, get 100s of emails, most of which are illiterate and sometimes just base. I don't think its necessarily about you but personally but rather the massive amount of wheat to sift through to dig out the chaff.

I worked on the basis of being honest about who I was, my circumstances (not how much I earned) and what I was looking for. In my letters, I took care to be literate and polite. If my mail got lost amongst all the others, so be it but the ones that I did get through often commented that it was my initial email that got them to reply amongst the plethora of other "hopefuls".

Then you get lucky

OK, not a dating site, but I would never have met them, if I had not bought a Scooby.
Maz, Bubba, Manda, LF,NG, Chris and Paul, Pete, Dai, Lisa,Puff, Micky, Sara, Swiss. Hell, the list is endless.
Have you actually met Maz, Lisa and the crowd or are you referring to being in touch with them on here?

Met them. Got the best hug ever from Maz. Puff gives good hugs too.
I've met Lisa and Micky quite a few times now as they live not far from me.
Swiss, Sara, Maz, Puff. I met when my WR1 was on show at Elvington a few years ago.
Bubba etc, I met at one of Bubbas gigs. What a night that was

All fantastic people

Met Ms Jock on Dating Direct 2 & 1/2 yrs ago.

We had been emailing for a few weeks then I broke my ankle when I fell off my bike. She thought it was over (the emailing) because I wasn't in touch for a week, but I was in hospital! Anyway, enjoyed keeping in touch with her and found we had similar humour and interests (she likes sci fi & vampire shows lol!). Anyway she waited and we met up 6 weeks on when the stookie came off and got on great from the off, even if I had to ask her what she meant when I offered her the first drink : couldn't work out what "cab sav" meant, lol!

She's brainy, funny, good natured, sexy & pretty. I met plenty of girls in pubs but I was usually under the affluence of incohol, hic!

I should say I'd been iut on a few dates with other lasses. Most notable was a German lass that didn't want anything serious but just wanted me to contact her monthly when she was in need of servicing (actually I didn't take her up on her offer!). Also a wee kiwi lass who looked stunning..............in her photo. I genuinely didn't recognise her when she came into the pub! Didn't go as far to say "have you gained a few pounds?", turned out the pic was 6 yrs (and maybe 6 stones!) earlier!

Nope, it's not sad. Can be dispiriting if it doesn't work out, but then the stakes are high and the results can be ideal!

Andy

I don't think it is remotely sad. My neighbour got herself out of an abusive relationship a few years ago. He was a serious alcoholic. She almost bankrupted herself as she had to buy him out. It was a terrible time for her and she spent most of her time at my house.
Her confidence took a major bashing.
She joined some dating website, can't for the life of me think which one. Anyway, over the last year her confidence has come on leaps and bounds and she has met some lovely blokes.
Not ready to settle down yet, but she is having fun and after what she has gone through, she deserves it.
Plus she has the bonus of not needing to go out clubbing or pubbing, in the hope of meeting someone nice.

And you are fab too.

Was that trip to Elvington the one where we first met you? Now that was a good night.

We've met pretty much the same group of people and I have to say the same as you, great people.

Ask the ladies. I've never claimed to be exciting.

Snazy is hooked up despite being Mr Bump.
Antc is hooked up despite being from NG17 and liking his food.
Swiss is hooked up despite being old and not funny.
I hooked up despite the uniforn.

When I worked in rallying I was always working silly hours or away for weekend after weekend on events so I had really very little or no social life at all. I wasn't the best when it came to speaking/chatting up women and really lacked a lot of self confidence. One night I decided to join a dating site just to see what was there etc. I have been on a few dating sites, Match, ALT and Girls Date For Free.
As some people have said on here that have used dating sites, you send a load of emails to women you like the sound of and look of and you get maybe 1 or 2 emails back from all of the ones you have sent which can be a bit disheartening.

As with most dating sites you find some women that are right horrors, fakers and just out for what they can get for nothing. But you do meet some lovely women who are 100% genuine. Some I am still in contact with today and are quite good friends with.

I was living in Carlisle when I was using these sites and really didn't want to meet someone who lived hundreds of miles away but I then saw someone who caught my eye so decided to email her, the only problem was she lived in Milton Keynes, 270 miles from Carlisle. We emailed each other for a while, we both thought we lived too far apart so stopped emailing for a while.

Prodrive then had an open day of which I decided to come down for and emailed the lass from Milton Keynes to see if she would like to go as well as she also into cars. We met there and really hit it off. 3 months later I had packed my job in and moved down to Milton Keynes to live with her. We have now been together for nearly 4 years and are engaged to be married.

I have had to leave my family and best friend and all my other friends back home I do get to see them now and again but by no means as much as I would like too.

Im now a member of a scooby club down here and have met some lovely people and got some really good friends.

I know dating sites are not everyone's cup of tea but I worked for me.

If they're using on-line dating there is a reason!*

*Not all reasons are bad (e.g. some people are just out of circulation), but you will find that in many cases it's a less favourable reason e.g. personality of a shark, look nothing like their picture.......

Go in to it with an open mind and not expecting much and maybe, just maybe, you might get lucky!
