I've always wanted to do a PPL but never had the money so I turned to flying gliders which I found cheaper. it also gave me something to do in between take off and landing (not like powered flight )
I've always wondered why I cant do a PPL in a light aircraft/ PFA for half the price of learning in a cessna.
a guy at the gliding club with a PPL told me its a very expensive way of having a bacon sandwich. Take off, fly to another airport, land, bacon sandwich and fly back

dont think he could have afford a full English at £150-£200 per hour flying
For those interested in flying but cant afford to do powered flight you could consider Gliding. its cheaper and every similar http://www.gliding.co.uk/

would it be possible for me to rent for £70 and get someone to teach for free?
I doubt it unless you know someone who is an instructor, has the spare time & lack of need to make any money. Most of the instructors I know are not exactly living the champagne lifestyle with a lot of free time & lack of monetary constraints.

the odd instructor I've met was doing it to build up air time to move into commercial flying
An instructor once offered to teach me for free but the aircraft hire was £120 per hour back then and there was no way I could have afforded it free out of Uni
