Where intercooler cores are concerned the two main considerations are the thermal properties compared to the core size and the pressure drop. Basically what you need is a core big enough and efficient enough to do the job of controlling the compressed charge. Generally large cores have to be that size because of their inefficiency. They also add weight. Providing a tube and fin core is carefully designed and large enough for the job in hand it will always have a pressure drop and weight advantage over a bar and plate. Most intercooler cores fitted are way too big for what they are needed to do.
