If you want a "cheap" run about look at ph1 172 or Saxo VTS's both mint can be found for less £2k. Mod wise the 172 is quiet limited from what I have read due to state of tune already on it, VTS with simple breathing mods can be pushing 140/150 brake easy. But tbh if I was spending £5k, it would be a Mondeo 155 ST TDCi.

No more kiting then?
I've never had any experience personally with any of those, although ive heard great reports on diveability but I've heard of quite a few reliability issues with Renaults too. My mate has a Megane 225 that he has had from new (MY2004) and it's driven like Miss Daisy for 98% of it's life and it's had all sorts of problems.
Last year saw him spending almost £2000 on random stuff like the alternator and things. . Even minor things seem to cost a fortune too, although obviously I guess you would be doing anything like that yourself.

Think ive decided on a full fat 182 with both cup packs.
Its the hot hatch performace benchmark and to be honest theres sod all else out there i fancy.
So far ive looked at: 5 to 6 grand budget.
Clio 182- (Current favourite) biggest bang for buck, lots of equpment, gutsy motor and best handling. Downside, its french and a bit flimsy.
Fiesta ST - Hard to find an unmolested one, limp chassis and a bit gutless. Also huge lack of equipment. However, cheap to fix and half decent build quality.
VW golf gti (MK4) - Bombproof build, looks alright. Most have done huge miles and a bit boring to drive. Motors alright but i dont want a turbo. Late golf drivers are mostly ***** lol
E46 3 series - High milers, old shape now. Expensive to fix and a bit juicy to run. Not quick or exciting. Good build quality, great equipment.
E36 M3 - Too old too juicy, great engine and chassis, bargain bruiser. Probably not the best daily hack
VXR corsa - NOPE!
Civic type R - Great engine, good chassis not bad interior. Bit bigger and maybe a little more practical. Pig ugly and engine gutless below 5 grand. Not much equipment and if its only entertaining above that then MPG will be stupid. I dont fancy changing down just to overtake on the motorway.
Integra type R - Same as above but older and uglier lol. Much better chassis though.
S2000 - Same as above, great looks, great engine, harsh vtec and dont handle that great. Crap diff.
Z3 roadster - Too old, high miles and a bit hairdresser. Great build quality, engine, chassis and quirky looks. one worth having is out of budget
Love the van to bits, but im just so bored of it now on my daily commute. Need something fun, nippy, newish and half comfortable.

tested 182 from a dealer for one of my friends; lift off over-steer and really nice feedback once the traction control is off. ST170/ST150 will be cheap parts but 182 seemed to have loads more torque.
