I just got back from spending the weekend at my mums. My brother flies back to Oz on Tue, so it was a weekend of family time. It's been 18 months since we last saw him, and will be Christmas before we are all together again.

It's been a hard weekend, lots of questions about grandad.

We went into town yesterday and bought some helium balloons. We all wrote a letter and the children did some pictures. We attatched them to the balloons and set them off in the evening.

I told the children that if they ever wanted to tell grandad something, this is what they could do.
I like that idea. Good that you've had your family around you at this difficult time.

I just wanted them to be involved in what's happening.

I have been quite open with them about how he died, as I don't think that dressing it up helps them to understand.
They are still very young (almost 4 and 5) so I don't want them getting confused.

I am very greateful that you have all been so supportive here. It's been a great help.

I don't live near my family as I moved away a few years back, so it's nice knowing I have people to confide in.

Good to hear that coming on here has helped a bit. I've never met anyone from this site but there a a few snr members that I would happily confide in. Your experience has made me consider whether I would start a thread on here if something similar happened in my life. You know what, I think I would!

My dad -

My son -

My mum came across that picture of my dad last week. I'm shocked at how similar they are!

There's a pic of my dad with some hottie at an ice rink when he was 17yrs - he looks like a bloody clone of me at the same age - spooky!

We have literally hundreds of pictures af my dad, and his dad. We have spent a few happy and tearful moments looking through them.

Yup. Bizarre, but of course entirely natural. Says a lot for the idea that our parents live on - in us.
