Hodgy - there is a massive difference between very, very competitive and possible deceit. And that is the whole point. Would you want to be associated with such a brand?
Your point about the GTR is a good one. Let's just say that I bought a GTR because it trounced every Porsche around the 'Ring. And then discovered that my GTR, even driven by Walter Rorhl could not get even close to beating any of the top Porsches. I would feel I had been deceived.
Some people do buy these cars because they achieve a certain benchmark. If I bought a Turbo S and could not do 0-100 in 6.5s drinking a bottle of coke I would feel aggrieved!

a technical "trade" arguement between the journo and Ferrari press corp
for most customers (apart from the few who obsese over decimal places) irrelevent because as Mr Harris says "it does not get better than this"

i'm amazed a manufacturer hasn;t gone out and said to some reviews to go to any dealer they want and tank one of there choice out to test, show that the supplied car is exactly as the normal one. Then made it a selling point that what you see is what you get.

Fundamentally, a car at any level, especially at this price point should deliver what the manufacturer purport it to be capable of.
If Ferrari release press cars fettled for more power, better handling etc..and this isn't representative of how the car will perform in sales spec i.e when the customer gets it, then they are misleading customers and this WILL hurt the brand's credibility!
I don't think a brand can ever be sufficiently good that it excuses them misrepresenting their cars! This is just manufacturer arrogance and will only be to the detriment of the marque as rivals (e.g. Porsche) will build road cars to match the inflated specs of the ferrari test fleet and sooner or later the penny willl drop that the Ferrari -irrespective of what the PR people say- have a car that has been overtaken by the competition!

Maybe we should all write into TG recommending it as a good test for next series. Sure Jezza wouldnt be bothered about pissing of Ferrari too much.

Speaking of GT-R and inflated claims.
Back to back, same day, same driver - could the GT-R really beat the Porsche?
GT-R v 911 'Ring

This goes back a long long way.....
I just recalled Jaguar's pre-launch prototype E-type. (reg no. 9600 HP ) this particular prototype (one out of five in total) was used as a press car to show it off to the press and display at motorshows across the globe. It was the very same car that touted that the E-type Jag was a 150mph car, as publicised by the press.....
Indeed 9600HP was a 150mph car....but the mass-production E-type Jags that followed it which were sold to eager customers were not; You'd be lucky to squeeze 140mph out of one! And a federal spec XK-E (USA) Jag probably would only just scrape 120mph due to the emission control, gearing and bigger bumpers+raised suspension!
So I guess, things don't change!
