I think it's a bit much suggesting that it's probably got less than 87k on it when you don't even know the car lol. 87k is actually really low mileage for a 97, it's more likely it's got more than 87k than less!
Only way you could see if some of the displayed mileage is in km's is find the first mot it had in this country and see if it says km's on the certificate. Or if it's got any jap history etc.
If it's been through a dealers hands they'll not have advertised it with more miles than it has that's for sure.

All I am saying is he can only go by what the speedo reads as he has not said what history he has. It is more than likely the car was imported some time after it was new ( most early cars were not imported at brand new, very few infact), so, this means the car would of been driven in japan and racked up a few KM before it came to England and had the speedo converted.
This means the 87000 miles showing isn't actually 87000 miles. This ofcourse is only true if the car was used in japan, hasn't had a speedo change and hasn't been clocked.
He can only go on what is in front of him. I would bet the car has done less than 87K.

For instance, my speedo reads 81000 but I know the car was imported in 2000. So the first three years of it's life were in KM. This means the 81K my speedo reads isn't 81000 miles.
I do have every MOT from when the car was first imported so can prove the miles, but you can see what I'm saying.
