I'm in Libya at the moment (was working on a rig) but this morning was evacuated back to my company's compound in the desert to await evacuation to somewhere (not sure).
But I/we are stuck in the compound now because my company could not get civil aviation to authorise a bloody flight to allow us to GTFO. Told it should be tomorrow now.
What is not great is we have had guys in fatigues and tracksuits - armed with AK's - come into our compound and start taking vehicles, fuel, all sorts, they have not threatened anyone but strut about like they mean business. No idea who they are, they have no rank or other designations I can make out.
I fully expect them - or someone else - to come back tonight and take/demand more stuff.
It's not particularly comfortable here - especially being an expat, even though we are 100's of KM's from Tripoli and Bengazi. I have not seen that much news because the internet has been blocked, but looks like it is kicking off.
Hopefully out of here soon and not coming back!

Seriously though I hope it does not get all ridiculous and that you get back safely

How about Winston
.
CHURCHILL ON ISLAM
I am sending the attached short speech from Winston Churchill, delivered by him in 1899 when he was a young soldier and journalist. It probably sets out the current views of many but expressed in the wonderful Churchillian turn of phrase and use of the English language, of which he was a past master. Sir Winston Churchill was, without doubt, one of the greatest men of the late 19th and 20th centuries.
He was a brave young soldier, a brilliant journalist, an extraordinary politician and statesman, a great war leader and Prime Minister, to whom the Western world must be forever in his debt. He was a prophet in his own time; he died on 24 January 1965, at the grand old age of 90 and, after a lifetime of service to his country, was accorded a State funeral.
HERE IS THE SPEECH:
"How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries, improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live.
A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement, the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property, either as a child, a wife, or a concubine, must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men.
Individual Muslims may show splendid qualities, but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it.
No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science, the science against which it had vainly struggled, the civilization of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilization of ancient Rome."

I was going to say a few days ago that the UK government’s response will be predictably chaotic
and one can only wonder how it must feel as a UK citizen stuck at the airport in Tripoli to see all the other EU citizens fly off
even the logistics manager of BP can pick up a phone and get a plane ffs
still, at least the organisation of the royal wedding is going to plan

However, there is particular concern for some British oil workers thought to be stranded in isolated desert camps.
They are struggling to make contact because the phone networks have been disrupted and their supplies of food and water from Libyan cities are running out.
"Some we know have been subjected to attacks and looting. They are in a perilous and frightening situation," said Mr Hague.

I'm still stuck in my companies desert base but it is quiet here and we have tons of food and water. Some guys with AK47's came and took a number of our pickups a couple of days ago but they have not been back.
My company is trying to sort an evacuation flight but it has been very difficult getting permission to fly in and out of Trip. Total cluster. Trip airport is said to be utter chaos with 1000's just out on the grass areas with no food or water waiting for planes. I know loads of our office people gave up and are now on a boat to Malta or something?
We have been told to stay put and I believe options of a flight direct out to Egypt are being discussed. Trip is over 1000 km drive and the Eqyptian border is 400 km or so. Too dangerous to drive we have been told and our company will forfit responsibility if we do drive. Some local guys have already split ranks and driven off at their own risk.
Some hysterical talk that Gaddafi may bomb the oil fields here over east as a final act of revenge/retribution. I'll be in a pick up heading to Egypt if we are no out of here before then!

Anyway, sometimes people dont have much of a choice, they get sent there by their companies or that is where the work is and they need to do it to feed their families, pay the mortgage etc, every time you fill up your car you should perhaps wonder how that fuel got there, if it wasnt for offshore workers from the UK I doubt it would get to the pumps so readily.
All the best Tony, hope you get back safe soon.

Tony if you can't get to Tripoli you and your colleagues might be getting a visit from British special forces, especially if them bods with the AK's are still hanging about...

Good to see your still trolling the site f1 fan, nothing changes . But no where in this thread did I say he should be left to rot (unless you can see otherwise). The OP should have weighed up the risk/profit benefits before embarking into the region , its no good moaning now its backfired on him. He's obviously had time to come on here posting, personally I would have spent that time planning my escape
