No wonder my fuel consumption is rubbish. Maybe 4th gear if coasting along in traffic, otherwise 3rd. 5th and 6th only for hwy use. I thought I was being sensible driving in 4th gear.

well i have fat fingers funny man
i just feel if you can not work out what gear to be in at 30 mph then you should get a auto, its just not hard to work it out. Its more economical to keep excess load of the engine rather than chugging along in 6th i find its nicest to keep the rpm at around 3 - 3.5k at 30 mph

Steady with those sausages... If you were lucky enough to met Jeff you'd not be surprised to see a sprightly weasel-eyed "oldie" like myself.

He's not one to exercise his dump valve for the public's benefit.

As for obvious, it's not always down to trash it everywhere, my Exedy clutch makes a dreadful racket between 1400 and 1700 rpm, so I stay in 4th to keep above this.

3.5K is looking for a fight with something

3- 3.5 is fine for me as my journeys to and from work is not at a constant 30 mph in the townie bits, never is. i don't have a loud exhaust and b/v and im too lazy to keep changing up and down gears and my mpg is acceptable. On a long stretch i might change up a gear, but that's the point everyone's situation is different you just do whats comfortable for your situation. surely there's no need to ask a community what gear you need to use. is there?

The OP asked "Can you use 6th at 30mph?" not what gear, and that's how the thread started ....

Actually, the title states '6-speed gearbox, what gear around town?' so both seem relevant...

I personally would not use 6th at 30mph....

Got to agree with that - "the right gear..." is the painfully obvious answer

JDM 6 speed driver - I recommend 6500rpm in first around town

That's the thread title, but then IMO the first line of the post changes the goalposts.

There is another part of that post as well ...

He asked "what gear" not "what gear do you need".

Doesn't matter - He is driving his own car in 6th at 30 mph and it clearly is marginal ("sometimes it groans, sometimes it doesn't...). What other people's cars do makes no difference to his car - just put it in the right gear...

i tried mine in 6th at 30mph today and it was only doing 1100 rpm, thats only slightly more than tickover.i really couldnt subject my car to that kind of driving.4th gear was 2000rpm which is about as low as i would ever want to go.

Do you have a UK box. I have a JDM 6 Speed box and 5th @ 30 is ok.

my jdm sti is fine in 5th at 30mph, 6th is easily used once on a dual carriageway.

My 2.5 STi PPP will pull off in 6th if need be...

I found out when I momentarily forgot that I had a 6 speed box and went for reverse on a 5 speed box! And that was before the forged/big turbo upgrade......

There is simply no substitute for the low down torque of a well mapped 2.5 impreza

2.5 conversion.
Whatever gear you feel comfortable in. There is no 'one suggestion which the masses should follow'. I use all 6 gears all the time in my jdm, wherever I drive.
