It's a Toyota which has much thicker paint than a Subaru (200 vs 100 microns iirc) ...but do i really have to go out & take a picture just to satisfy you? like i said before go & check your other half's car! failing that your mums! ...although i do get the feeling you're more interested in arguing, rather than the argument.

As I have already stated and as is obvious to most people if you could scratch up paintwork with a fingernail in normal day to day usage then the amount of grit and the likes hitting it on the roads would lay waste to the paintwork in no time.

Ahhh, so because it's 'obvious' to you ...it must be so. I'm not an aeronautical engineer so have no idea about fluid dynamics or turbulence so couldn't possibly comment as to why small particles don't scratch/pepper mark the front of a car ...so maybe ask them?

But i notice, you didn't want to check your other half's car... so here's a pic of mine:

http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w...y/IMG_0476.jpg

Not too easy to see on silver, but you can make out the fine scratches & where they appear in relation to where your hand/finger tips would be, as opposed to base of the finger (where a ring would be)

& here's mine:

http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w...y/IMG_0477.jpg

far easier to see, due mainly to colour but also probably due to paint thickness (Subaru) ...again notice where the marks are, deep under the handle, where finger nails would be.

Don't just take my word for it, maybe head over to the detailing section & ask their opinion?

But like i said, you seem far more interested in arguing...

I only seem far more interested in arguing because I don't agree with you. Not sure why your door handles look like that. Would advise you to be more careful cleaning your cars. Put it this way mine don't look like that nor do my other half's. Make of that what you will.

The problem is that there really are quite a few people out there who do that sort of things for laughs. Frequently.
I really wish I hadnt read that. These humanoids should be exterminated. end of. What possible purpose does society have for such scum?

If that happened to our cat and I knew who it was......

However, if I lived in an area that was frequented by these types (hooded probably), I just wouldnt get a cat anyway.

When it comes down to it, do any of the cat haters on here like dogs? I dont really like dogs, but I respect the fact that they are living creatures and have as much right to live as I do.

Thanks for the cleaning tip, but the rest of the door (visible on the pic if you look) is fine.

Not sure why your car doesn't have marks & mine does, maybe I (or previous owner) have girly hands? ...& your missus has man hands?

Still ...carry on arguing the t0ss & digging your own hole, as others point out that their paint work has similar marks.

I have no problem, I'm merely pointing out that even relatively soft finger nails can & do mark/ scratch paintwork ...& so it's not inconceivable that a cats claw can do the same or indeed worse.

F1's argument appears to be that because his car doesn't have any marks & that the above just isn't possible (due to his car not being marked & his 'theory' that if paint was so soft it would be 'stripped to bare metal' by merely driving it, without taking into consideration that possibly manufacturers apply different thickness' of paint to different areas of car or indeed the possibility that maybe airflow plays a part)

BTW I like/respect cats (I've owned a few) but haven't owned one for a fair years as I feel it would be a little bit unfair due to the type of road i live by (fast 'A') ...but i'm not a zealot either & appreciate that fair few comments on this thread are tongue in cheek

lol the last few posts in this thread beggar belief. How the **** are you managing to scratch your door handles like that with your nails?

I tested this myself out of stupidity n boredom rather than anything else and there is noway I could scratch the paint with my nails like that in the pics in here unless you have the hands of a bloody spastic! Not saying your wags are retarded or anything but cmon they must be literally punching the door handles with their fingertips to do that kind of damage. Is that why women are always complaining about chipped nails???

Good grief, for that you may as well invest in the equipment, do it yourself and then you can do it again for when your car next gets inflicted. In the mean time offer your services out for Ł350 a go and have yourself a nice side earner.

Thank you, someone else with some common sense at last.

Fingernails cannot do that. End of!

Try a google image search "door handle fingernail scratches" ...it doesn't appear that uncommon.

Some good shots on here:

http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum/...or-handle.html

& Lexus mention it in relation to their new scratch resistant clear coat:

Word from the horses mouth ...finger nails or claws CAN & DO scratch paintwork!

As to why, firstly small contaminants (dirt/ grit) either under/in the nail, or even already on the surface of your car, are scored across the paintwork as the nail comes into contact (he has dogs that have even scratched patio door glass because of the above!)...secondly, womens nails tend to be longer (so come into contact more often) & also are polished ...& cellulose nail polish can actually be as hard as clear coat!

His suggested solution to a cat 'problem' would be to use a citrus based product (lemon/orange peel, sticky stuff/tar remover, or citrus based cat repellants/sprays found in pet shops) ...as most cats hate the stuff! but warned that citric acid could possibly eat into laquer over long periods (so test it first).

The other option would be either get the bonnet armourfended or get a body shop to spray it with a few extra coats of clear coat.

He warned against a car cover, as similar to above ...they can 'trap' contaminats between the cover & paintwork & any movement (such as wind or you taking it on/off) can scratch.

Nice bloke

now i've calmed down I've got to agree with Daz on the scratches...its just dirt from fingers scratching the paint when you reach for the handle, all my cars have similar marks, but a bit of t-cut and they are mostly removed.

I **** you not, I've had lots of different coloured cars and they all mark the same...that includes a good dozen brand spanking cars and they all exhibit the same kind of scratches in a relatively short period of time, I don't wear rings either
