Deja Vu (Libya)

Okay, I'm late to the game here but if it's about a Dictator killing his own people how come we (as in the UN or whoever) have not yet helped all the innocents in Zimbabwe being terrorised and killed by Mugabe?

Not stumped at all. Your agenda is clear and you are simply not worth wasting time over. You deliberately misinterpret what people say to make yourself sound clever. Put simply you are not worthy of my attention. My only mistake is to have paid any of your posting any credence at all.

As far as Mugabe is concerned the West had a moral duty to sort things out but the African Nations were against it because they viewed it as an attack "on their own" - because Mugabe is black and the West have no real strategic interest in Zimbabwe. Also China would have used their veto to protect their growing interest in Zimbabwe's resources.
Mugabe was responsible for far more deaths than have presently occurred in Libya but the country is strategically very important to the West. So it takes the decision to go in. Double standards from a moral standpoint but that doesn't really matter in pure political terms.

Evening James ,
I like to rock. These days I am rocking to the Smashig Pumpkins and Interpol, so more of an Indie Rock. In fact I am going to see Interpol on Wednesday, far more fun than these ridiculous threads of yours.
In fact, lots of weather we've been having lately, no? Nice weather too, I'd say. I like to go out and enjoy it. Went to a Spring fair today, lovely day it was! Watched lot's of cricket on the telly too, it was great!
What did you do today?

We could have taken unilateral action, but this would have been 'illegal', wouldn't it, f1?

Are you aware of the advent of mobile phones?

Geez you taslk some cr*p!
Why? Would the oil companies pay for all the armaments we'd used? Would they pay compensation to any service families that had lost loved ones in the "conflict"?
Like I said, it's a civil war. Why do WE have to get involved. You haven't answered the question, you've just put down some random words from the interweb in a condescending fashion.
Dave
Well we've done budget, haven't we? Whilst Libya involves oil (because there is oil in Libya) it is not about oil, it's about revolution. Let me throw a swerve ball at you though, Dave: let's pretend it was about oil, wouldn't that make moot the 'we can't afford it' argument? In other words, one can't have both condemnations in one's armoury. ...
...
This is about supporting and promoting Western values. This is about letting other dictators know that we'll step in to defend a popular, democratic, secular uprising. Egyptians voted for the first time today on a new constitution - the sense of liberation must be overwhelming! Not everything is about the next year or even the next decade, but setting the wheels in motion for a future of hope. So, I understand that you're cynical (around everything), but have some faith in this country and its allies. You may just find that there's a smidgen of decency and nobility and duty in what we undertake.

Yes, Leslie, as crazy as it may seem, the permenent members of the United Nations do leave a couple of quid to oneside for this sort of thing. You seem to be basing your rebuttal upon Liam Byrne's ill-advised gag.
Are you going to come out in support of the intervention, btw, given its legal status?

There's a user on here reading Orientalism by Edward Said at the moment. It tackles the highlighted viewpoint - might be worth a look.
On the issue of 'mob uprising', that's not what I saw in Tunisia and Egypt; It was largely peaceful and considered as was Libya until Gadaffi started shooting people. The sectarian uprising in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia are, of course, a very different flavour and Al Qeada's effort in the Yemen needs to be controlled.
By the way, I'd hate to be accused of double standards so must ask why you're now supporting UN intervention despite this post:

'kin 'ell, has the whole of Snet developed short-term memory loss?

just shows the weakness of your argument - who cares how innocent protestors are slaughtered.
(saddam used all that stuff in 1992 and we stood by and watched)
for the record I broadly support the current actions ---- but i am acutely aware of the contradictions, nuances and ironies of current state of affairs.
something which just washes over your biased and prejudiced head

Well are you going to come out in favour, you haven't so far? Other than to approve of f1s name-calling, you've remained silent since the resolution was passed and military action began. It appears a little ignoble, old-boy.

As for the topic it appears the Arab Council aren't too happy with the way the 'coalition' are going about this, some UN member states aren't either, the 'coalition' appears not only to have no plan for after the mission is complete and 'successful', but little idea of what the actual objectives of the misson are and the danger is Gadaffi will cling onto the West, the rebels to the east and we enter another long drawn out protracted 'war' of stalemate. All the while this is costing the UK another fortune. Great news !!!

On a serious note, PressTV's rather good if you want to get an Iranian perspective rather than just the British channels that you say you watch. Aljazeera seem be the most balanced news broadcaster at the moment.
