you can't silo these issues -- and that's the problem, other wise you end up with US/UK backed authoritian and corrupt regimes shooting protesters whilst we are bombing authoritian and corrupt regimes for shooting protesters.

I just don't think the people in much of Africa have a chance to better their situation, and, without going into a lengthy post about all the different aspects which contribute to that, the style of government has to be the most important.
Some of these countries were probably better off (materially) under British oppression than that of their natives.
Again all IMHO.

I reckon you're right about the lack of access to resources, it creates inequality. But what is the cause? I can never think about the problems in Africa without also thinking about the unfairness there. That has to be a pretty large factor IMO. But again I'm a believer in the individual, and society is just those individuals coming together as they choose - no doubt more socialistic thinkers would have a different view.

LOL! I said I'm thinking about it. Pardon my brevity but the truth is I haven't made my mind up. Something is not right however.
I have loads on at the moment, but will bring my usual gravitas to bear on the situation at some point, to enlighten both you and others.

PS. Before I do, I think TDW should post some Libya pics of his so we can get a feel of the situation, no?

Thing is how to you create democracy out of thin air? Democracy is not just having a vote or having democratic institutions, you need a civil society and a democratic culture, or you end up with a mobocracy driven by populism.
Basically you need a broad middle-class/bourgeois class who are politically conscious.

Useless elites is the problem and the useless/dysfunctional political institutions they have set up.

Female emancipation follows after Capitalism and relative prosperity.
More primitive economic modes still require women to primarily be child bearers/raisers.
Capitalism requires women to be producers otoh, equal to men etc. Capitalism requires all economic potential to be unlocked.

Whereas you and JT, goose stepping around your bedroom(s), shouting out "KILL, KILL, KILL!", whilst frothing at the mouth, know all the answers?
I don't think so.
But as long as we've sent over a few gunboats to keep the colonies in line, you're quite happy it seems?
Why no pics? You weren't working were you? Just hiding from what I recall? Are you saying that you or anyone else there with you, took no pictures of the people threatening your location? (obviously discreetly)

Sorry Tone, but the situation is so fast moving, with a distinct absence of facts that I don't know. What's wrong with that?

You dole out enough condescending crap so be prepared to be told what you are and deal with it or are you cutting and pasting so much you don't even know what you come across like any more?
Try listening to yourself and maybe get that massive ego laden head out of your sorry **** while you are at it!!!
Goodnight

There's a user on here reading Orientalism by Edward Said at the moment. It tackles the highlighted viewpoint - might be worth a look.
On the issue of 'mob uprising', that's not what I saw in Tunisia and Egypt; It was largely peaceful and considered as was Libya until Gadaffi started shooting people. The sectarian uprising in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia are, of course, a very different flavour and Al Qeada's effort in the Yemen needs to be controlled.
By the way, I'd hate to be accused of double standards so must ask why you're now supporting UN intervention despite this post:

'kin 'ell, has the whole of Snet developed short-term memory loss?
