Sorry Tone, old habits and all that. You have come on and made great strides, but we haven't forgotten your murky past here on SN. And BTW I can out intellectualise you in my sleep, so don't go there.

So, sorry for being annoying, but I don't have the time to respond properly to this thread.

yes -- we should concentrate the trillions spent on arms by promoting trade (only then can you lift these countries out of poverty), your support for selling arms to these regimes just show your views for what they are - posturing.

These weapons are rarely used externally, and as well as promoting totalitarianism are most often used to suppress the indigenous population.

The utility of weapons doesn't necessarily rest with their direct use.

Would you argue that the cold war nukes had no use?

There was no nuclear or conventional war between the superpowers.

Back to Libya - from the news it seems that the National TV service acts as an effective brainwashing tool for the population promoting the great leader and inventing civilian deaths caused by the evil West.

But I suppose the UN Resolution rules out the West taking out the station with a suitable missile/bomb?

Perhaps the rebels could be given some guidelines?

"It's a fair question and certainly presents an ethical dilema. We've revoked the export licences for Bahrain and Libya and guess that we'll look at other situations country by country.

The harsh reality is that the huge demand for arms amongst countries who wish to defend themselves will be met by someone. The only way we can ensure that we can achieve absolute ethicacy on this is to completely withdraw from arms exports.

According to BAE, defence exports were worth £7.2 billion in 2009, we're the largest exporter to the EU, the largest exporter to the US and the industry supports 300,000 jobs.

So, it comes down to a choice between a huge negative economic impact at home that leaves a gap in the market for another nation to fill whilst being able to claim moral authority or adopting a pragmatic approach and accepting the inevitable criticism everytime a conflict ensues."

Brainwashing civilians leads to them volunteering as human shields leading to civilian casualties producing propaganda for the state television which puts more civilians at risk. If taking it out would ultimately protect civilians it would be a legitimate target. "All necessary means."

While the BBC and Sky brainwash the population in the UK by inventing the fact there are no civilian deaths and convincing us that Gadaffi is another Saddam Hussein despite the fact we were being told he was perfectly OK to do business with until a couple of months ago.

As ever the truth lies somewhere in between.

Do you REALLY believe not one civilian has died as a result of our action?

No, that's pushing the argument too far. Not even Tony Blair would have tried that one

Don't forget the civilians who actually run the TV network. And I would guess that the human shields are not all willing volunteers, just borrowed for a while until it all ends or they are dead, poor b,astards.

Edit to ask - Could the West jam the airwaves?

The human shield tactic makes me vomit - the babies on the news last night - now thats an ethical dilemma! Take out targets to try to bring the conflict to end quicker and risk their lives to save thousands or cede to Gadaffi's tactics and prolong it? It takes real guts to make those kinds of decisions.
