Seriously F1, reading your posts anyone would believe your understanding of the country's military budget is that if we're not actually in an all-out shooting war with somebody, the whole apparatus costs us diddly-squat. That can't possibly be true, and while Iraq and Afghanistan might well be costing / have cost a hell of a lot more than routine training ops back home or wherever they're normally run, Gadaffi has a grand total of 30 fighters in its entire air-force. Try to get some perspective on this, before you turn into a gurning parody of yourself.

Would an attack jet be able to take out a tank without killing too many people around it? Would a helicopter gunship be better for this purpose?

Conflicts in the following list are currently causing at least 1000 violent deaths per year, a categorization used by the Uppsala Conflict Data Program[1] and recognised by the United Nations.[2][3] The UN also use the term "low intensity conflict", which can overlap with the 1000 violent deaths per year categorization.[4]

1967 Naxalite-Maoist insurgency India 10,500+ (1,174+ in 2010)[5]
1978 Afghan civil war Afghanistan 600,000-2,000,000 (10,461+ in 2010[6])

[edit]Other conflicts
There are many other smaller-scale armed conflicts that are currently causing a smaller number of violent fatalities each year.

Let the b*ggers sort it out themselves and let's stop being the worlds policemen. We have enough of our own problems to sort out!

I suspect that they are hoping a little that the 'shock and awe' will stress the Gadaffi regime and make it fall, as it is well known that Desert Fox (the 1998 bombing of Saddam) almost tipped Saddam over.
Anyway it's interesting that the US is now bombing Gadaffi in the context of Lockabie. The reach of US justice if long it would seem...they don't forget.
