Some great examples available now and as long as you are happy to do the VTEC thing and rev the engine they are very capabale little cars and handle and go well. You get Recaros in some, a lovely snickety little gear shift, a solid usable interior, the flexibility of a hatchback and they look pretty good.
They are pretty much bombproof if servivced properly and running costs are a welcome relief after a Scoob.
Ignore all the naysayers and drive one. Push on a bit and see what you think. It's not as capabale as the Scoob, but not far off.

whatever you dont touch a clio, iv owned 2 scoobs, 2 clio's and 3 civic's and i had nothing but trouble with my second clio with the ecu and suspension. The civic's were perfect for years. Civic all day for me

saab 95 t or gt tdi
not your norm golf or cupra but really low key and they pull like a train from 40 to 100 there great fun m8, i had one for a bit really well made car and good motorway runner. the only other car i like is the golf mk4 gt tdi great power delivery smooth as silk gearbox really light clutch and good bulid. any thing other than that is going down the lanes of a scooby so you might as well buy one

If you were looking at a larger saloon I'd 2nd the SAAB 93 comment.
You get a really decent spec'd car for not alot of money. But if its middle sized saloons I'd also consider (shudders) a Mondeo.
I quite like the dark coloured ST with the boogie nights red leather interior.

The only non performance car that I think looks ok is the Mazda 6 Sport, although all the pictures Google show up look like ****e!

Reading this thread, I gather that the sole reason for the sale of your Scoob is because it attracted unwanted attention.
Tbh, any performance car, such as a Type R, will always attract unwanted attention and be a target of theft as the scum know what these machines can do and know if they can get their hands on one it'll be one hell of a joy ride!
If you want performance but without the hassle maybe look at low key, stealth type cars, like a Fabia RS maybe?
Just a thought.
