There is no such thing as "legal import size" the law states that if there is sufficient room for a standard UK plate (either rectangle or square) to be fitted, it must be... having said that most cops in the UK arent the brightest sparks so you will no doubt never have any come back from it.

Only reason i fitted mine was my GT-B Legacy had only a 330(ish) mm recess, so couldnt have a standard UK width plate, and i hate two lined plates, so this is the best of both... and it is still legal, as text size and edge spacing is still exactly as it should be.

I think you'll find Imports are allowed to have a smaller plate Mine has a BSI number on it too

Copied from the VOSA legislation regarding Imports:

Display of Vehicle Registration Marks on Imported Vehicles
(which have a restricted space for a standard sized number plate)

Certain imported vehicles may be permitted to display number plates with smaller characters if:

The vehicle does not have European Community Whole Vehicle Type Approval
and
The vehicle's construction/design cannot accommodate standard size number plates

As pretty much ALL Scooby's can accommodate a Standard Size UK Reg Plate, they are NOT Legal!
