It makes you wonder, i came to the conclusion that people only mention things that go wrong, where as the masses without problems haven't got anything to report,at least that's what i keep telling myself.

Got to admit after my last one why am i even thinking of buying another one, but as you say there are subarus that have done 150,000+ miles and are still going strong, thats why i have gone for a just about standard sti this time instead of a modified wrx

Yes, to an extent but you can draw certain conclusions from reoccurring problems, i.e. there is no denying the rear strut knocking problem or the 2.5l engine failure.

Yes as you say certain models do seem to have recurring problems, ive been lucky with my 2litre 60k trouble free motoring (touch wood).

That's a better bet stronger engine and unmodified so a safer bet

It is a common fault with the boxer engine...there are some that can go on forever, but generally a lot need a rebuild around 70k, as low as 50k in some cases..although its the jap imports that suffer the most due to not being remapped to accept crappy UK feul..its not so much a problem, more to remember your driving a performance car, and most have been 'ragged' in their lives by uncaring owners and all engines strung out will need rebuilding after time.
An RB320 for 14.5k ??? Damn ive seen cat D's go for more than that. I would expect 19-23k for an RB from a dealer depending on mileage ans interior ect. Big ends from my experiance normally rattle more with revs. im thinking oil pump or water pump.

this is what i thought when mine had the same symptoms, but unfortunatley it was the big ends,at one stage i was sure it was coming from the top end,ive had bottom end failure on my first scooby and it was a definate low down thud thud sound, audible at idle only to start with and then as time went on a solid knocking through out rev range without any power loss,my latest one ended up sounding proper rattly with intermitent gradual power loss in the higher rev range.in total ive had four lots of big end failure(anyone want to lend me their car),in three different cars, all have had different symptoms and sounds.
