Thanks Mattee & Jim - useful info.

Im not massively into tuning. Hhave never done any before but have generally had new cars so like to keep warranty intact. Nice to know its possible though.

As for an X AWD version - even if one does come to the UK It wont be in time to reach my budget. As for Audi A/S4 just doesnt float my boat looks wise inside or out.

Regarding RFL, from BMW's own figures the D is 174 C02 g/km = Band H £180pa and the I is 186 = Band J £235 so not a massive amount and I said before it amazes me how BMW achieve that with a 3.0TT as its in a lower bracket than my current 2.0 CTR (Band K £245pa although as I lease I dont pay it anyhow). And the 2.5 STi WRX is Band L = £425pa. Subaru dropped a massive bollock with that one.

BMW tweaked the engine in 2007 (I think) so it came in the lower tax bracket. Check yours before you buy it.

There isn't much to argue about, I'm really happy that a diesel engine produces a lot of torque at the crank....it's just a shame drag racers and circuit races didn't know about this years ago.

Well that 335d does very well at Santa Pod against supposedly rapid petrol cars, the 335d beat the 335i (manual) around Brunters and the diesel LeMans cars clean up every year.

Not very good at this are you Tony de Chaviot?

P1 - our old Jimny was 85bhp from a 1.3 and the SAME tax bracket as a 335d! Ours is pre Efficient Dynamics so is just over 200g/km but still not bad for around 300bhp.

BMW are very good at high power/low emissions. Land Rover aren't. 122bhp. £435 a year RFL. Doh!!

I dont watch much Le Mans but I was under the assumption (maybe incorrectly) that the rules were slightly biased toward Diesel in terms of allowing turbochargers??

There is no need to insult me just 'cos I don't drive a middle-class rep mobile in the hope of peer acceptance.

The 335d's winning at the POD are modified and probably driven by a better driver. I don't believe the 335d is faster than the 335i all things being equal, but they who cares about BMW's anyway?

...and you know full well the Audi R10 etc was offered major concessions in an attempt to make the diesel competitive.

Here's a quote:

The concessions afforded diesel-powered cars at Le Mans this year are numerous. Compared with a turbocharged gasoline-fueled car, the diesels enjoy a 50-percent larger displacement limit, a 52-percent larger intake restrictor, and an absolute boost pressure limit nearly twice as high. Additionally, the diesels are allowed variable nozzle turbines in their turbochargers.
I'm not saying diesel is bad just not as good in a performance car comparing apples with apples in other respects. The whole torque at the crank thing is just a number on paper.

**** in 'ell!I'm in danger of agreeing with Tony. Diesel may have it's place in engines but it will never replace petrol as the purists choice.
Infact there's a good debate going on in general.

Indeed, so how many diesels was it that he decided were worth his time?

Petrol engines usually run a lot less boost and don't have VTG or sequential turbocharging though. Diesels stand up well compared to a similar sized NA engine. A well tuned turbo petrol is usually in another league except for economy. N54 is very much held back in standard form.

Doesn't matter how fast or powerful a car is, if its not fun to drive then there is no point and that is were diesel fails imo.

I looked at emaps for my 330d, they quote 270 ish bhp with their chip, however evolve claim 286bhp, thats a fair bit of difference, (both quote the same torque).

Need to find out on the BM forums which are the better maps.

Chip the 335d though and they're both claiming 350bhp!

DMS and Evolve are very well respected too. SJ - that and 510 lbs-ft!

The slight headache for these remappers is that the majority of 335s, both i and d, are dynoing a fair whack over BMWs quoted figures. 300 + bhp/440lbs-ft for the d, well over 320bhp for the i for well looked after examples.
