alex sorry to hear that mate, but you would do well to stay away from SMR or any other complete/refurbed/as new or other crap from ebay, if you want a replacement stick to known enthusiasts selling bottom ends etc, OR GET A REBUILD again from someone in the know and well known like api to name one, if you decide not to do this and think you would be better going your own way and buying something from ebay and getting someone else to fit.
when it all goes wrong again all you'll get is told you so, i have been where you are and so have hundreds on here and you do well to listen to the advice given.

Can confirm thats f**cked. You are hearing a big end rattling there.
If the engine was low on oil or has been low on oil in the past, then is likely to what will have caused the excessive bearing wear (aerated oil plus excessive oil temp - less oil in the sump = less cooling). Question is how or why did it get low on oil? Whilst these engines do use a little oil between services, it shouldn't really be using more than a litre every 5K/5months. Otherwise we're looking at a piston ring or turbo issue. But obviously running extra boost does cause more oil to get through the oil breathers and increase consumption.
Seeing that you've caught it semi-early. The damage is limited which will reduce rebuild costd, so DO NOT use or start the engine until its fixed. Fingers crossed by not running it, you may save the crankshaft before the journal surfaces get damaged (doubt it to be honest, but one can hope).

IMO that is no gaurantee of getting a 'good' engine. Its still very much a gamble.
I've stripped plenty of healthy sounding engines to find the bearings to be well worn beyond what would be acceptable.
In some cases I found an engine to be in worse condition that one it was suppose to replace! (the only exception is it didn't knock...god knows how, because it was that bad it should!).

Problem is, the crank shells are the last part's that you get to when stripping the engine, so the once it is a part, it just doesn't make economical sense not to replace the crank.
Then you will have to check your rods, pistons and rings.
Mine was cheap at £2k as I only needed a crank, shells and one rod.
So you really have to think to yourself whether it is worth selling as is. You just bought a gems ecu, that must be worth a fair bit?
If you intend to keep the car and start on the modification process, then build an engine that will last.
Also get some advice on here before modding, as, no offence, you don't sound like you know too much about cars!

I will be amazed if it just needs new shells. Plus it is not a good idea to re-grind a subaru crank.

Alex, dont cut corners it will cost you more in the long run
Get the engine rebuilt properly instead of buying a second hand engine you know nothing about. There's nothing stopping a second hand engine having the same fate as this one.
£2k is a reasonable price for a basic rebuild, it gets more expensive if you start adding forged goodies.

You're looking at a big bill for a rebuild here I'm afraid. Rebuild by a reputable expert the only "safe" way of proceeding.
Don't try and cut corners, you'll only invest money in something that might not last and leave you even more out of pocket in x weeks or months time. If you can't afford to have it done properly it's best to either save up or cut your losses and sell up.
400bhp can't be done for 2k reliably!
