Answer is 2. Jeez..... over half the people got it wrong.

- Work out brackets first.
- Multiplications take precedence over divides.

48÷2(9+3)
48÷2(12)
48÷24
2

Let's put it this way, if the formula had been written 48/(9+3)x, and you were told x=2, how many of you would have still said 288?

Honestly, the school system these days

Surely the absence of the '*' between the '2' and the '(' indicates that the 2(9+3) should be treated as one entity

At least that's how I was taught

Google it, answer is 288.
The fact that Google says it's 288 convinces me even more that the answer is actually 2

Listen to Kieran, he's right.

Division does _not_ take precedence over multiplication, and if you have the same precedence then do as Kieran says, and you'll end up with the correct answer of 2.

It's BODMAS, always BODMAS.

B Brackets first
O Orders (ie Powers and Square Roots, etc.)
DM Division and Multiplication (left-to-right)
AS Addition and Subtraction (left-to-right)

48/2(9+3)
48/2(12)
24×12
288

5 beers in and it's still simple.

How can this be a debate?

Saying that, it's its, whose who's, brought bought, and many other's () also go by without challenge.

I tend to grind my teeth and ignore posts with those in these days. Gave up long ago trying to correct the grammar of others.

48 divided by 2x 9+3 =24 48 divided by 24 =2 or

48 divided by 2 = 24 9+3 =12 24 divided by 12 is 2

so its 2
