There is a card trick I do. You select a card - they are all placed randomly face down on the table and I ask questions that result in cards being taken off the table.

Here is the trick - I never touch the cards - you remove the ones that you select. And yet the one remaining card will be your original choice. It is mind blowing to most people - how could you have known? How could my simple questions lead you to the right card?

Exactly the same techniques.
I often do a trick where I pull a card out of a pack of cards, and without looking at it, present it to the person and say the cards number and suit

1 in 52 times i get it right, and look like a genius

the technique you describe, with a little natural coincedence is all it takes for some people

If there is an after life I'm going to be pi$$ed.
This life is more than enough ta very much without floating off to the netherworld and harping on about the same **** for eternity to anyone that will listen. Jesus. I would say kill me now but in these circs that would not help either.

Yeah - but I get it right every time

My point is that the punter completely believes they are choosing the cards to be taken off the table - by the way I ask the questions. Of course they aren't. I know where the card is and I 'direct' them without them realising it.

It is the same with NLP, cold reading, etc.

Take this example - "Normally you are a very cautious person, but sometimes you are very impulsive?".

Cautious people would think - how do you know me - wow!

Impulsive people would think - how do you know me - wow!

The statement is brilliant - two polar opposite characteristics embodied in one question that seems like a statement.

Anyone with decent sensory acuity can do stuff like this - I do coaching and people can be totally stunned as I 'know' things about them that even they don't know.

No I don't - I am simply asking carefully designed questions.

By opening the conversation with the reader you immediately become a prime candidate for a cold reading.

You would be amazed at what these techniques can make happen. Ultimately it is a form of hypnosis.

Does it matter? If you feel good and they did not use it to make financial gain then all good.

Some however use these techniques to make a lot of money. And if people can be made to feel good they are happy to hand the money over!

Here is a great example of how you can do a cold read for getting what you want.

You see how he constructs it and when he practices it you can really see how a recipient would think - how does he know so much about me!

If you get to see a proper one, they'll astound you. I went to see one after my wife died and i didnt tell the medium anything (visited her home) told me loads of things that were true. It does help the healing process knowing there is something else.

Its all a trick, but lots of people enjoy it as it tends to make them feel good.

None of them ever say bad things. Its always nice warm fluffy things or random messages to give out. They never say, stop sh@gging your best mates sister or that your unlcle bobby is in hell.

Tends to be women mostly who attend these events as they have a more spiritual side IME. My mum is big into all this crap and it makes me laugh when she goes on about it.

"You have a great need for other people to like and admire you. You have a tendency to be critical of yourself. You have a great deal of unused capacity which you have not turned to your advantage. While you have some personality weaknesses, you are generally able to compensate for them. Your sexual adjustment has presented problems for you. Disciplined and self-controlled outside, you tend to be worrisome and insecure inside. At times you have serious doubts as to whether you have made the right decision or done the right thing. You prefer a certain amount of change and variety and become dissatisfied when hemmed in by restrictions and limitations. You pride yourself as an independent thinker and do not accept others’ statements without satisfactory proof. You have found it unwise to be too frank in revealing yourself to others. At times you are extroverted, affable, sociable, while at other times you are introverted, wary, reserved. Some of your aspirations tend to be pretty unrealistic. Security is one of your major goals in life."

Correct.

I remember the mediumship being discussed in a thread where SN webby Stuart also gave the account of his experience.

"Feel good" is the factor to encash for these mediums and tricksters. If their readings can make their client feel good, and get them to move on from their "stuck" state in grief, trauma, confusion etc, that is a reward for the client. Client will be happy to pay for it without wanting to investigate the validity of the medium's claims for seeing the unseen, or knowing the unknown. Client will choose to stay in denial for gaining the "feel good" factor. Medium will feed this need. For the client, dream shouldn't be broken or the sense of safety (catalyst in helping the client to move forward) for the client will crumble. Therefore, client chooses to stay with the dream than the reality.

It can be argued that non-believers also choose to stay will the non-believing aspects of such matter, but then again, why would you believe anything without the proven validity supported by solid evidences??

I know some people who are addicted to the mediums and psychics to get their prophecies fulfilled or their confusions etc. sorted. They keep going back to them, and keep paying them. They call these mediums their "tonic".

They are very clever at persuading people to believe all that they say.

I think it would be unwise to get mixed up with it.

I'm a man of facts and just as it's a fact that Apple products are superior to their competitors, all of this mumbo jumbo medium is a load of bull believed by the gullible. Talking dead people, whatever next.

As TX says - have you ever seen Derren Brown.

He can get a group of people cold to pick a word from a certain page from a newspaper.

It is called embedded commands. It is a form of Ericksonian hypnosis. Go and research Milton Erickson, learn about NLP, it is the same basic devices these people are using to make everyone believe they are making accurate statements.

What do mediums do? Communicate with the other side...

So audience is likely to be full of people with two key things in common - someone they know who is on the other side; and b) a wish, no matter how sceptical, that they would like to communicate with them.

Like any form of hypnosis - anyone can be hypnotised, as long as they want to!!

Mind you I did hypnotise someone once when they said I couldn't. They came back an hour later asking me to undo it!

You learn some of these basic techniques and you would be amazed how you can move people - whether you choose it for good or ill; to enlighten or deceive is a whole different ball of wax.
