whats wrong with the pump if its just the magnet coupling at the front why not just replace it real easy to do and a lot cheaper.
9 times out of 10 the pump it self is fine the coupling normally wears out and sadly i full pump is fitted instead of just repalcing the coupling
not sure on scooby pump tbh im sure it will just be a standard ac pump as per every other car out there
dead easy to chk matey if u can reach front of pump and it rotates then coupling is fine if so take a positive from the battery and conect it to the single activation wire that is connected to pump if the magnet activates and pulls the front that u just rotated inwoods then the switch is working, this means that the pump is ok and something else is preventing it from working
p.s you dont need to empty the system to change the coupling

In this recent hot weather I decided to whack on the air con on my bug. Nadda. Not remotely cold.
Decided to get a re-charge as figured all the gas must have leaked out - odd as it was only recharged 7 months ago, but gave it a go anyway.
Took it to the main dealer as they were the same price as the fast fits, and are much friendlier.
As suspected, no gas. Filled it up, and there were no leaks. Odd. The only explanation is when the clutch was changed and the garage took the engine out, they must have somehow opened the system and let it all out. Worrying as I don't think it's particularly nice stuf.
Anyhow, air con on and no worky. The pimp has seized and is no longer working.
Subaru said it was a £300 part plus labour
However, they had a newage engine in that had a blown head gasket that they were robbing parts from (the previous owner got a new engine and didn't want the old one), so offered me the pump from that for £100. They think they should be able to fit it within an hour, so £75 labour (ouch) and wouldn't charge me to drain the system and re-gas.
Having driven around the last couple of days without it, I know I need it back!
I'd do the work myself if it wasn't for re gas side of things.
Does this spun like a rip off, or a good price? Are there any other options?

If more than service iems are required we can advise.
We also have several overhauled A/C pumps in stock along with heat exchangers.

Sweden, I'm pretty sure what you're describing is what the mechanic showed me. I trust the lads there, so believe that it is the pump that's gone.
Is it really possible to change without draining the system?
How evil is the gas?little concerned it all leaked out while I was stood next to the car in a close garage!

If it's the pump there's plenty on ebay. Pretty easy to fit. If you're not confident fitting something like this yourself (and understand it's probably more to do with the gas) then any air-con recharging garage will easily fit it for a lot less than main dealer labour.
I reckon if you're lucky on ebay an auction one will be £20 + postage. There seems to be plentya round £30-£40 buy it now.

you will only need to drain the system if you remove the pump from the car.
The coupling is attached to the shaft that drives the pump think of it as the clutch on your car
the pump body and pipes is what gets filled with the gas/oil and is a sealed system, word of advice if your going to do it yourself with a second hand pump make sure to ensure that the pump has the correct amount of oil in it before you fit it to the car, or your going to seeze it just like you would a car engine, tbh if you are not very mech minded then pay for it to be done, and as has been suggested a good ac company will do it cheaper.but as i first posted if its the coupling then why dont they just fit a pump refurb kit ??
