A bit extreme for a bit of light ribbing.

We are talking about a car forum where a guy with a pretty expensive (by normal peoples standards) watch asks for advice on cheap servicing.

I've been around for quite a while and I reckon this kind of query would always have received some ribbing before the sensible replies arrive.

Excuse me Jerome but can you look through my first post and tell me where I asked for cheap servicing?

I asked whether it could be repaired for a reasonable cost. Obviously if its going to cost near the price of the watch to repair then it wouldn't be worth it.

Considering there are people on here with collections of high end watches I hardly think my eight your old mid level Breitling is really posh. Unless people just want to make an issue out of it btw. Personally I'm not really that into watches.

I'm happy to take a bit of a ribbing, but I'm not sure what is wrong with someone who knows nothing about watches trying to find out what it might cost to fix his watch.

Thanks Chop. Like you I have been too lazy to have it serviced and so has never been done.

£250 seems very reasonable, who quoted you this?

That shows what a plank you are. Firstly this is nsr, ie we don't discuss rice rockets here.

Secondly there are some people (or at least were) on this forum who know more about watches than most jewellers. Yoza in particular (not sure if he posts anymore?) was basically an expert who could take many high end watches apart and service them.

Now you wouldn't know this because you have arrived recently and spend most of your time trolling and posting about immigrants/muslims.

There was a time when you could actually get expert advice on just about anything here, we had people from just about every background posting.

Many of those people have stopped posting now and a lot of that is down to them being fed up of people like you

To the OP....My post was early on, was good advise from someone who is not guessing but actually owns a Brietling, you have that sent away to a brietling dealer it WILL be a£200 - £500 service, get it serviced by "joe's watches" and it may not be!.....cant all be c!nts can we??!!

took my Rolex Sea Dweller in to Goldsmith for a service and have a new bezel fitted (gets sent back to ROLEX) at the end of October 2010
20week wait... fair enough


went in three weeks ago on Saturday.. (so 6months i'd waited)

to be told they ring rolex on Monday.. got fone call on the thursday saying rolex sent out a Quote to Goldsmiths advising the watch needs a new FACE and GLASS!!!!!!! and are waiting to fr the go ahead to start the work.... £650!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Goldsmiths say they never had a quote!!!

So a 20week wait again... but under the circumstances rolex will do it in 8weeks instead of 20!!!!

not pleased, will be writing to goldsmith + Rolex next week with my disgust!!!

Most people don't even spend £250 on a watch in the first place. Forgive me for using the the word cheap, maybe I should have said cheaper...

I also certainly didn't say there was anything wrong with asking here - I'm aware there are some expensive watch fans on SN. I was taking Flightman to task for getting all bent out of shape because you got some ribbing.

Anyway, you seem to have the advice you seek, so hopefully everyone's happy now.

i used to service my TAG at DUVAL LTD - the official importer like a good customer, but just got tired of paying £250 a pop for the pleasure of them looking at it (and then sending it back "serviced" but always with a note telling me how scratched it was)

now I get a great guy in Cambridge to do it - fraction of the price and he still pressure tests it etc

I am in the same conundrum as Ding though -- it really needs new stopwatch mechanism, along with bevel spring and battery

and I am not sure it is worth spending £350 on

i might just get the bevel and battery done -- and put the saved cash towards a new watch

Sorry to make such a big deal about this Jerome but that is not what I said mate. I did not ask whether I could get it fixed cheaper, I simply asked whether it could be fixed for a reasonable amount of money. Please see the OP.

Since I have no idea what lack of reserve power on the watch means in terms of the underlying problem, I had no idea what it might cost. It's much like having a £5k car and then needing to replace the engine for £4.5k, it's not worth it, you may as well scrap the car.

So, we maybe splitting hairs but I did not ask about cheap or cheaper repair. I asked whether it could be fixed for a reasonable amount of money ie is the repair actually worthwhile.

I don't mind a ribbing, but please rib me on what I have written, not on what you think I have written

I have just sold my Breitling...

It was the watch equivalent of a Vauxhall Vectra,ie overpriced tat..

I was tired of it stopping and after its 3rd attempt of being fixed,it stopped again a while ago.I threw it in my watch box and flogged it last week for £200.. It was still dead.

I've got a 'posh watch' which I inherited from my grandfather and he and I've always had it serviced by the manufacturer. Due a service soon and I can't help feeling I'm paying £300 for an embossed certificate and a dip in some cleaning some fluid.

Rolex ALWAYS say the glass needs replacing, i have taken several different family watches in and they have always said the glass needs changing, if you take it directly to St james Square you will see some hot woman (staff and customers) and it will be serviced quicker, you also get to go through some cool security doors !

Do you always need to send it to the original maker. Also what do they actually do when they service a watch?

I once read an article by someone who worked at Breitling and he said dont bother with services. You can cause more damage disturbing the mechanism. Only send it away if there's a fault.

When I had an older Rolex I took it to Goldsmiths who said they could service it but wouldn't guarantee the "gas seal" so I couldn't wear it in water, still wanted £300 to (in my opinion) **** it up. So I sent it (via them) to Rolex, it cost £600 but came back like new...

well after 22yrs i thought mine needed doing, gas escape valve is the issue, hence why it's only worth letting Rolex do it.

I'm not sure I'd call it that as my wife bought it for me

However it has never kept very accurate time. It always seems to run about 5 minutes fast, even when I reset it within a few days it's five minutes fast. It has always done this.

The clicky bezel thing stopped being clicky about a year ago as well.

As I said I'm not really a watch buff anyway, it was just a nice watch that my wife bought me when I got a big promotion about 8 years ago.
