M.O.T Shocker

Not sure about a two year interval, ok will save me £150 or so every two years but I know my cars are roadworthy, I take wheels off and inspect brakes, I notice slop in steering, I replace tyres before they are on the wear bars but most of the public don't, they will put up with all manner of defects as long as their heap gets them to the Trafford Centre and doesn't cost them any money, they begrudge every penny they spend and don't value their own safety, if they are turning up with components in that kind of state now, what will it be like in two years ? they wont turn up as they will have crashed !
Perhaps a mileage component should be included as well ?

I got a nasty shock with my MOT since they have now changed the tyre wear rule to the outer eighth of the tyre tread on each side. It means that if your tyres have worn more on the outer or inner part of the tyre it can be failed even if you have a few thousands of miles left on the centre part of the tyre tread. The old bit about 75% of the tread anywhere on the tyre does not apply. If you have a car like the Mini which wears the inside of the tyres a bit more due to its suspension geometry even with perfect tracking on both front and rear wheels then you can find yourself in for an expensive time even though the tyres look perfectly fit for a good few thousands more miles! The wear on the outside of the treads does not affect the handling of the car in wet or dry conditions.
I think that is over the top unless of course the outer bits were dangerously worn which mine were not. That could be left to the common sense and experience of the tester.

That would have been manually typed in by the tester rather then being chosen from the official advisory tick boxes on the PC. These were removed by VOSA a while ago as garages were deemed to be using them to sell parts than weren't required.

As for the original post, like J4cko, I'd be onto this as soon as I saw the pad was only biting part of the disk. I'd almost certainly have noticed that the brakes were getting worse! How some people do not is beyond my ken, even though I'm married to someone just like that!!
As for the 4-2-2 MOTs coming along, this is another of those media reports that completely ignores the fact that the EU is behind all of this. See ... http://eureferendum.blogspot.com/201...s-in-dark.html ... for more info.

Yes the Government wants to bring that in

some people dont maintain there car for a year and then there shocked when it fail's an M.O.T, e.g tyre is so bald or the wiper blade is falling apart. Just imagine if it was 2 years M.O.T i think there would be no tyre left on the rim

I put new disks ont he rear of my Saab, wasnt clearing the whole disk one side so had the whole lot apart, cleaned, lubricated and generally spruced it up, instantly it was fine again, one wheel with reduced performance is not good for a stop from high speed !
