it makes me giggle to think how much money you loons have spent on an escort

if you want to go for massive power your better off in a car that can handle it like a skyline (500 bhp is peanuts to what them bigboys can put out).

were you lot picked on at school or are you challenged in the trouser department

there is some reason you guys want some power

To John F:

Putting 947bhp into a westie would be ...ermmm... interesting, but not necessarily impressive...

Put 947bhp into a westie AND put it down into the pavement, now that WOULD be impressive

As for Cossies and Scoobies, always wanted a cossie waaaay back when the sierra first appeared but couldn't afford one (and wasn't old enough to pass my test, but why let that put you off...). Now I'm a bit older and have the cash... had to be a scoob... would've happily settled for a cossie though!

Noticed a couple of things. First I'm surprised at the drivetrain losses on the Cossie...140bhp I thought it was only Scoobs that suffered that badly.

And, that MG Rover graph looks dodgy as hell to me. Since when has power and torque crossed at 4750rpm ????? The plots also look like they've done in been done in Excel. I'd be more impressed if they crossed at 5252rpm, unless Rover have found a way to defy the laws of physics !!!!

As for the vast majority of so called "high power" Jap cars, "most" of them are done by tuning companies who wouldn't know what an engine dyno was. They wack on a few Jap bolt on's, a big turbo, and assume if the turbo is rated to 800bhp, that's what the car is doing.....I must try that

At least the big power Cossies are done right, and that's why a 500bhp Cossie, can beat a "700bhp" Skyline !!!

R19KET,
That is indeed alot of power loss through the tranny, but then the tranmission side of the Reyland (box, drive shafts, diffs etc) is somewhat "Heavy Duty". And the amount of heat it must produce, has to be immense......would be interesting to see what the figures would be, if there was better cooling.

I think you have hit the nail on the head, regarding the Skyline comparison. But I suppose the arguments will continue......

Regards,
Shaun.

Did any of yo uread the ccc Ultimate track day where i beleive (may be wrong) the cozzy esort 500bhp went on?

Very good article, "Its plant the foot and wait.....Then wait some more" was the caption with the car, they gave it a 3 out of 5 rating, as it had TOO much power, the lag ment you could not get it cleen through corners, then on the other side when the power came in if shot forward with such speed that you had to chainge up, guess what happend then? yes LAG,

All in al they were very complementry about the car, and it did do a fast lap time 51.40, and when yo ulook closely at the corner speed section you see that it had (in some cases) quicker ornering speeds than the scooby that was also tested.

Our very own scoobysport`s scooby was there with a few mods, nothing like that f the escort, and it scored 4 out of 5, with a lap time of 53.55, slightly slower than the cozzy.

If yo uget chane check out the article.

Catflap,
What makes those times EVEN MORE impressive, is the fact that the cicuit that was used (Anglesey I think), is like a mini go kart track. Not many straights and LOADS of tight twisty bits. Something surely the Scooby should of excelled in??!! Definatley not the kind of track the Reyland car would excel at. I would like to see Martin drive it around Dono!!! Just goes to prove how well a properly set-up Escort, can still compete with todays machinery.

Regards,
Shaun.

John,

"Shifted across" ? do you mean that when they changed the format, they mismatched the graph position, relative to the rpm ? Or you just guessing

Why? the reviews between them i have read have stated that the handling of the Scoob is better - not the speed at which it corners!! The escort is apparantly ragged on the limit and give you less confidence but it doesn't mean you can't corner as quick - there is a difference between handling and cornering speed - something scooby owners dont appear to realise my 205 handles far better than my fiesta but does not corner as quick as it has less grip!!

Because of the lack of straights and the fact that the Reyland cossie runs a T4 turbo (mega lag), surely this would mean that the Scooby should of been more spritely through the tight continous twisty bits. Can't see what you are pointing at on your last comment, as I thought the Scooby had both terrific handling and exit speeds coming out of bends??

Shaun.

The japenese allways imitate but very rarely innovate. The Cosworth in all its guises sierra, sapphire, RS500 and Escort to a slightly lesser extent are legends. The RS500 the most successful racing car ever built in excess of 40 straight Victories in the touring car championship. The engine is reliable at 500 bhp as that is what it was designed to pump out. Obviously the subarus drive system is more advanced its a more modern car. The Subaru is an excellent car that has really kick started the affordable performance car maket again but remember it plays second fiddle to the Mitsubishi the Cosworth was in a league of its own and still really is in many ways.
The Coswort has the badge and the heritage that the Subaru doesnt and lets face it how many company Escort Cosworths were there every other 21 year old IT consultant's got a scooby.

Very simple one this:

Cossies ruled the 80's
Impreza's ruled the 90's
EVO's rule the 00's

Remember each of these cars was produced to give the everyday man access to supercar levels of performance and handling - typically in the form of a small family saloon or hatch. As an " out of the box " proposition each one ruled it's day.

Just my two-penneth!!

Cool

Jonny,

I drive an MY00 Impreza turbo with a few mods to help me keep up with those 21st century EVO boys!!
Only got about 265-270BHP so I'll be of no interest to the high powered Cossie brigade!!

What about you?

Cheers, Scott.

Like i say, that diagramme is a .gif file. it's not meant to be a precise technical power to revs output graph.

dont you know what a .gif file is man? LOL

The power read on Janspeeds dyno was 947BHP peak. Pretty impresive out of a production block, even if it was modified heavily. It was also impresive that the original plan was to run twin centrifugal superchargers, but on the dyno run, just 2 days before it was shipped to boneville, they discovered the superchargers were stalling, so in two days they changed over to twin turbo's. Made the whole kit.

I got a call at 9pm from the guys at rover, and had to strip the inlet system off the 5 litre prototype in the esprit and meet the guys from rover so they could strap that onto the engine to run it in, whilst they made the turbo setup. That was a manic night!

thats why the article says its supercharged, because that was the plan, better temps and all that stuff, but they just didnt work.

A proper car:
436bhp / 419lb ft engine dyno confirmed and tested yesterday at 163mph in the wet at 6500rpm at Bruntingthorpe (still going)!

Swedish gear kit to take the power and a similar spec car (slightly lower bhp - 402bhp) has done a 3.32s 0-60 and sub 12s standing quarter....

Now ready for the Ring tomorrow...

QUALITY!
LOL
