Had it done with and without sedation.
They numb back of your throught with a spray, put a brace in your mouth so that u dont bite down and in it goes.

I have a really strong gag reflex. so after 30 seconds i was trying to through the camera back up.

2nd time i went to be nocked out, best way to go. quick injection woke up in recovery fine.

I had it done 5 or so years ago. A non-event sort of thing. I'd been having sore throat/irritated throat lining sort of problems. Up the nose and down the throat. Only time I knew something was happening was when they sprayed a bit of local anasthetic to reduce/prevent the gag reflex. You'll be fine.

I had it done and was not able to have sedation because I was driving. I had the throat deadening spray instead and when the camera had been swallowed which is a bit of a worry at first, it was not bad at all while they did the job.

It helped to have a nice nurse holding my hand as well though!

Reminds me of a joke ..

My granddad called me the other day to tell me Man Utd would beat Liverpool in the FA cup .. Tell me something I don't know I said ..

He replied "I can fit my whole fist in your nanna's ****"

They were checking to see if I was bleeding internally as I was extremely anaemic, and was getting terrible pain in my stomach. They took biopsys whilst they had the tube down there, as there is some sort of stomach thing which can cause problems - but I cant remember what it is called now!!

Came back clear. Anaemia source never found. Was stuck on a iron infusion for a few hours.. and so far it has been in the normal ranges *crosses fingers she hasnt just jinxed herself again!!*

Yep, I had had all sorts of things running through my head as to what it might be. Turned out to be only reflux.

I've already been told I have reflux from an barium meal, but clearly they don't think the pain to diagnosis ratio is correct, which to be honest nor do I.

I think I have a damaged muscle or a hernia ... and if they say, ok you need to rest for 6 months and it'll go, then fine, I'll put up with it for 6 month, if they say you need surgery, then again fine, under the knife I will go .. but if they say they find nothing, I'm going to be gutted..

Yes in my case it was acid reflux which they were able to confirm with the camera. It does get a very good view of your insides.

I was prescribed Omezaprole which is easy to take and sorts the problem as soon as you swallow the pill.

The word "pain" comes to my mind. Not during the scope but post op . Had it done twice as well.

Thumbs up

Usually they spray the inside your throat with a local anaesthetic (in most cases) to numb it which can be a little disconcerting but not dangerous and a lot better than sticking the probe in without the anaesthetic. They can do it with a general but not usually as the recovery time is much, much more.

keep calm - it will not take long for the procedure or for the spray to wear off.

They said they can't knock you out, only sedation and its my choice on the day.

Reading the NHS site, I think sedation is certainly the way to go for me.

Err yeah, but they had to break it up first. So I had a little jackhammer, a light, camera, drain, water supply and a mini pair of pliers all up the old chap at once.

It was for this reason I had a rather good flow afterwards

I had something similar done to my nether regions a year or so ago. Hysteroscopy and other stuff. I said I'd never had so many hands up there in my life.........well, not without being bought dinner!

I had a mahoosive bruise on my side afterwards........no idea where that came from!
