Some parents would probably shove a fruit shoot in their hand and haul them in the direction of the toy/book area and ignore them for 20 minutes. This mum reads a 3 month old copy of OK! while the child annoys people and makes a mess.

Another mum chooses to sit and read to her child and talk to him/her rather than the child run around the waiting room and make a noise/mess.

When did it become abnormal for parents to want to care for their children?

I read to my children pretty much everywhere we go, not because I am trying to turn them into child genius', but simply because it's nice, they like it and it stops them misbehaving.

What was the point? I have obviously missed something, while I was upstairs reading to my children, eating leaves and wearing jeans

Were you reading so loudly that the peasants in your nearby nhs doctors surgery could hear though?

Well I hope you enjoyed the leaf salad

Yes you did missed the point which was that these mums are simply showing off their kids by chatting in a raised voice so that everyone has to listen. If you don't recognise that situation then OK. Similar to the parents that let their kids run wild in supermarkets - and I don't like that either!!

My post had nothing whatsoever to do with chatting or reading to kids in a normal way.

But hey all I intended was a lighted hearted observation and I get all this

Firstly, by your explanation, yes I understood your point, you obviously don't understand my response.
Secondly, I hate the term 'normal' it is a label that we use mostly to describe behaviour.

So what if 'green' mummy reads loudly to her child if things like that way so heavily on your mind then you would kill yourself if you were me.

Even worse, if you were 'green mummy'!!

No they don't way heavily on my mind thank goodness. Just get on my **** now and again

But heaven forbid if I was to become a green mummy. I'll just stay a "normal" human if that's OK?

Lol! Yes.

But next time just think about why those mums are talking loudly to their children.

I know that there are a few Eco warriors out there, but those children might be there for reasons such as what you are poo pooing. Social problems, maybe they are deaf etc.

I'm not trying to have a pop at all, just trying to highlight the fact it's hard work being out in difficult environments with children as it is, without the rolling eyes, sighs and tuts from people who have no idea what the situation is like.

That's what I said, and I totally agree, that child may have been there for a check up. Things are not always so black and white as people think.

It's a sad world where people think that reading (louder than is allowed) to their child is purely to annoy other people.

I think that some people need a reality check.

No doubt this woman would have been equally as annoying to you had she sat their and given her child some raisins to eat, or been allowed to do pretty much anything.

I just find it amusing something as this little annoyance made the op think , I'll make a post about.

A lot of things annoy me in the day. General public, motorists. But feel no need to share with SN

This is nothing more than a mild annoyance. At least she is paying the child some attention! Too many parents just plain ignore their children these days.

So what am I allowed to say on SN? Perhaps we should seek your permission first

As I said above "But hey all I intended was a lighted hearted observation". It really is a trivial matter so why waste your time commenting?

And I recently posted a serious comment about rape and then got my knuckles wrapped for posting inappropriate subjects! So let's just relax and stay with Babe of the Week

And btw the kid wasn't deaf or anything like that.

End of comments. dl

You don't need permission , just can't see the Problem in someone trying to be a good parent.

But if you want you can pm me for new thread permission slip .

I know exactly what you mean!

It's not that they are reading to the child per se, it's that they are showing YOU and anyone in the close vicinity what a jolly good job they are doing of bringing up their child and don't you wish you were as good as them at parenting.

It's not for the childs benefit, its for the benefit of the mother.

I'm going to presume you dont have kids.

I'm also going to presume you dont have kids because you dont have a wife/girlfriend/partner

I'm also going to assume you dont have aforementioned wife/girlfriend/partner because either;

A) You're appearence resembles that of a 50yr old overweight 'Golum' from Lord of the rings

OR

B) Because you whinge about the most pointless innane **** known to man.

Either way, cheer up. It'll grow. And then you'll die.

As often as not there will be some mum, usually kneeling on the floor, with kid on knee reading a story to the little brat/bratess.

But mum doesn't do this quietly even though brat's ear is inches away from mum's mouth she does it in a loud voice, enough for everyone in the room to hear. You must know the scenario and for some stupid reason it really gets on my ****. Mum is not actually keeping the kid amused but rather telling the world how fabulous she is as a mum. These mums are usually either ugly and skinny like they live on leaves to help the planet or ugly and fat because they eat all the kids' cakes as well as their own food. They only wear jeans.

Anyone recognise this and does it annoy you?

Not disimilar to NSR in some ways there are plenty of "loud" people that come in here with a look at us, look what we do, look at what we've achieved, look what we've bought, you couldn't afford it, aren't we great, we know better than you snobbery

As a parent I know what you mean and I am very conscious not to ram my kids down anyone's throat and make sure I am not overly loud when in public.

I hqave certainly encountered the type of people you refer too but I'd rather see a loved up parent giving their child lots of love and attention than see the local chav benefit **** screaming at Chantelle Chelsea and Kai to stop what they are doing and start bloody parenting.

But what makes ( DL 'et al') you think that this woman (or group of mothers as they seem to be a collective) reads to their child JUST to annoy other people? Was she wearing a sign that said I like to annoy people?

I don't understand how reading to a child no matter how quiet can give off such on offensive vibe.
Its quite saddening that as a parent I too could be judged on such a stupid thing.

Fair enough, drip feeding a child sugary drinks and chocolate, never giving them a bath and letting them wear nappies and use a dummy until the age of five is surely something to be judegmental of. However reading to a child is not really something one could judge.

It is only certain people that seem to have made beleive that this/these parents do it solely to say LOOK AT ME!
I am sure she could so many more interesting things to get noticed.

I suppose you would also say something as stupid as this type of mother also only gives her child home made foods when out because she wants to say LOOK AT ME, I give my child home made food even when I am in a cafe.
Nothing to do with the fact that she might not want to bring the child up on greggs sausage rolls and additives, or that perhaps they have allergies....?

Great post - I think you've hit the nail on the head with that. Wrong nail but what the hell And the bit about Greggs sausages is so relevant

If I sent you a Specsavers' voucher would that be of any help?

Some of the parents on NSR are the best adverts for using contraceptives that I've ever seen.

Nah, next time I'm going to walk over and speak to child in a rough gruff voice and say "Hello little one, would you like a sweetie?"

And watch mum go ballistic

Yes I agree!

It's also apparent that most of the non parenting SN members don't need to worry about contraception, as they obviously dont have anyone who wants to **** them
