My old man has severe back problems & they have washed their hands of him, decided nothing can be done to help him.

The problems come from his spine but that don't bother him so much, its the resulting pain in his arms & legs that give him the grief. He can barely use his hands now and hardly walk.

They messed him about with physio, cortizone & the epidural nerve blocker injections. But nothing worked.

He then got referred to another specialist, who diagnosed the problem. He said if they didn't operate within so many months he would end up in a wheel chair.

After a years worth of MRI scans, further consultations, waiting for lost scan results and further scans they eventually gave him a operating date.

He was admitted to hospital the day before the operation, but a couple of hours before the op was due to take place he was sent home. We later found out reading the news paper the surgeon had to travel down south. To operate on some kid who had jumped off a pier wile drunk.

He then went on a extended holiday, injured himself wile skiing so needed surgery him self.

They then had to wait for a new consultant, further MRI scans & new operating date which he eventually got around 12 months later.

They operated, going in through the front of his throat. They removed some vertebrae, inserted some plastic bits and pieces.

That seemed to go well and he was allot better for a couple of weeks after recovering. But then he started getting more problems, they weren't sure if something had come loose but couldn't find a problem.

Anyway they then decided they were wasting their time and it was too late to do anything else, so they cancelled the other procedures they had planned. And wouldn't attempt to do anything with his lower back.

They went back to giving him the nerve block injections which did nothing. So they decided all they could do was give him stronger drugs for the pain.

He was prescribed morphine patches which he used for a few months, but the side affects were making him ill & messing with his heart.

He read on the internet about people with heart condition's are not supposed to use them. He got in contact wit his consultant after a week of being messed about and asked if he was ok to use them considering he suffers from Angina & has had a heart bypass.

Consultant said oh you shouldn't be on them then, stop using them immediately. forcing me dad to go cold turkey.

Hes now back just on Diclofenac. Gradually deteriorating,

Although the GP keeps changing them, you are only supposed to take them for so long, and they keep going against the consultant and switching him to cheaper alternatives.

Update. I saw the GP yesterday (after waiting fifty five minutes! appointment at 3.45, called in at 4.40). The GP was embarrased and couldn't apologise enough but he got a flea in his ear anyway. He stated he'd refer me back to the neurosurgeon for another opinion. I should find out dates and times on Tuesday so fingers crossed.
If in the circumstance I'm chasing my **** as has been happening then I'm probably going to book in at the above clinic (Kspine) for a private consultation. This is the second time they have been recommended although Dr. Manoj Krishna is on a twelve month sabbatical himself. Having looked at the website they are really at the cutting edge of treatments and surgical procedures.
To be honest it seems that a lot of people have suffered some sort of serious back issue, more so than I imagined. It's perhaps not as lonely and a hopeless situation as I first thought. There is light at the end of the tunnel. Once again thanks to all for sharing stories and offering not only advice but also reassurance and support. Sometimes that does more for personal resolve than any drug.

It's this aspect of the NHS that scares me.
