Hi guys
I just want to say a big thanks to everyone that has posted in this thread, i really appreciate all the help!
Ive just tried Adrian Flux and they quoted me 1200 pounds, ive tried to get in touch with Gary from KM but he must be busy, to be honest i doubt he'd be able to get me insured on an RA import for 800 which is the most i can afford.
Im not giving up on a Subaru tho! ive been looking through the forums and ive seen this thread :
https://www.scoobynet.com/scoobynet-...my97-98-a.html
And by the looks of it there are uk Spec impreza's that do 0-60 in around 5.5 which id be happy with.
Could anyone tell me what type to look for please?
Thanks again
Jay

Just before you jump in with 2 feet - are you fully aware how much it costs to run an Impreza?
Fuel is just the start of the story. They are not cars which can be ran on a budget. It's a while since i sold mine but this is what i can remember:
MPG = 20-23
Front disks = £100 + fitting
Rear Disks = £75 +fitting
Tyres depending on size = £280-£500 every 15k miles.
Servicing (assuming a MY99 car) every 7.5k miles
Clutch = £400 fitted (standard)
If none of that looks too bad then next on your list is mods which can cost you anything from here to 1 squillion £.
I personally would be looking for a car which has had a re-build by the likes of APi as that alone could be upwards of £2.5k if the engine let go.
What ever happens - it's a buyers market so don't let your heart rule your head. Imprezas are for sale everywhere so if sommat ain't perfect then walk away.

The thing to remember about a Subaru is, that even though they are 12 - 14 - 15 or more years old an can be bought for less than 2 grand these days; They still go wrong like a 25,000 pound car and a proper engine repair will write off just about any standard car made before 1996 unless you are determined to keep it on the road.
Some of the Japanese WRX Imprezas will be 20 years old next year........... and they still have the legs on most cars.
Running a Subaru is a big committment, not just insurance and tax, but maintenance and repairs need considering carefully.

When I bought my 2002 STi it had a full main dealer history. However within 2 months it needed new calipers (due to knackered bleed nipples) and had a gearbox fault. The gearbox fault turned out to be very badly corroded linkages which were replaced, but it meant the box was removed and split down anyway. As it was being removed I decided to fit a new clutch.
On top of that I replaced the front pads, discs and added braided hoses. The total cost of all this was around £2.4k
This year it will need a timing belt and full major service that's going to be around the £500 mark. Add in £200 for tyres that I fitted you are talking over £3k before petrol and insurance. Granted not all cars will have issues, but there is that potential and when they go wrong it hurts.......

Lol, It always makes me laugh when someone considering buying a scoob is put off or worried about the cost of insurance.
£200 is £3.86 a week extra £400 is £7.69 a week.
If that amount of money prohibits you from buying one you really NEED to reconsider your choice of car as that amount of cash is going to be the least you will spend during the period of ownership.
I'm not having a dig just telling it like it is..
This kind of performance does not come cheap, it can be done on a budget but it won't be a small one if it's a daily driver..

Ive always had a passion for fast cars. They make me happy when i go for a drive, if ive had a bad day at work i just jump in and go for a drive, my last 5 never had a stereo in it, i just love to listen to the engine and the turbo and watch the world go by.
It will be a second 2nd car as my girlfriend and i work at the same place, and use her corsa to get to work and back.
Im getting a loan to buy the car so i cant afford skyhigh inurance at the same time as loan payments im affraid. Ive got 800 saved for a years worth of insurance, and im hoping i can save up during the course of the year to buy the next, and so on.
I dont really like breaking the speed limit, and i dont motorway drive that often so i dont care if the car cant go faster than 90 really.
What i do care about is that sweet pull you get when you put your foot down, and even though im not some boy racer, i dont want to get had off at the lights by some stock broker in his Lexus hes just bought with his last bonus, so id like something that is at the very least sub 6, 0-60.
Petrol and tyres and discs shouldnt be an issue as i shouldnt be doing more than about 2-4k miles a year.
But im getting a bit worried about all the talk of gearbox's, clutches, diffs and big ends going, i couldnt afford to fix any of that if there prone to breaking

these cars are not bought to be driven like miss daisy. most have had a hard life (like everything there are exceptions). a 12 - 14 year old subaru will have about 150000 miles on it. you better be damn sure it had a shed load of paper work with it detailing a full service history otherwise you can't be sure of it's provenance. as i have said many times before, the buying of the car is not the problem, its the upkeep.
having saved £800 for insurance is commendable but you have nothing for contingency and as sure as the pope is a catholic things will go wrong. i am not out here to scaremonger here but you need to go into this purchase with your eyes open. subaru and budget don't go hand in hand unless you a very, very lucky.

Yes, and chocolate engines and gear boxes,
I think thats one of the few cars that people spend more money on than subaru's .
Save some more money and then get a scoob.
At the rate the prices are going down this time next year you will pick a 3k car up for 1.5k.
It's not as if you really need a car, and the wait as well as the fact that you don't have a loan will make it feel even sweeter

Please please please don't buy an Impreza Turbo, WRX or STI if you are doing it on a budget, especially if you are having to borrow the cash.
Engine rebuild - £2000 MINIMUM!
Then there is the insurance cost that you mention. Then there is the issue of trying to flog it when you get fed up with the running costs.
Seriously, to run one of these things without a worry, you have to have at least £300-£500 a month spare cash in case the worst happens.
As you are having to take out a loan, this is obviously not the case.
They are fantastic cars ( I have owned 3) but they are one of the most expensive to run.
Think long and hard about this.
Why not get something like a civic type r? A lot more reliable and an excellent engine note with a few mods. 0-60 is where you break drive-shafts and gearboxes. 30-100 is where the real fun is at.

Its either gonna be a Scooby or an MR2 Turbo or a Celica GT4 or a 300zx TT i think.
From what i can tell the Scoobys are the cheapest to repair and the most reliable out of them all.
Surely a well documented year 2000 UK Spec Impreza, with about 70K on the clock isnt gonna fall apart with me driving it twice a week for half an hour.
Ive got the loan sitting in the bank now, so im just trying to decide what to do, i thought id made up my mind but you guys make it sound like Scoobys explode on a regualr basis lol

You call me big nose one more time, I'll take you to the f"cking cleaners.
My two penneth on this is, Imprezas can be expensive things to run, and insurance should not even be a factor in the thought process. As people have stated above, tyres, servicing, consumables, lets not even talk petrol, they all mount up.
As for the 0-60, it means diddly really, especially on the road. If you are a traffic light grands prix competitor, it wont be long before the law are feeling your collar. If you like the car, the heritage, and the bad name youll get for owning one (mine is a mids life crisis, wait until I get my Elise!!), then get one. If you are getting it to boss other cars on the road, prepare to be disappointed, unless you throw money at it.

Uk turbo at 220bhp i fink, is not really where its at as im sure most will agree.
with transmission losses not really that quick, but they do handle and go well enough in the real world but your not going to be the traffic light king.
As i said before and many after me say the same, jdm sti with 280 bhp is the place to be, but buyer beware the fuel is a ****** and they are very addictive.
I bet you'll be driving it every chance you get.
Just pick a good one that has been mapped for uk fuel and you should be fine.
There is a very nice waggon on here for £3250 in the for sale section..
